Scotland v Australia: Resist revenge, Vern Cotter tells Scots

Head coach Vern Cotter says Scotland must avoid falling into the "trap" of looking for revenge when Australia visit Murrayfield on Saturday.

A controversial penalty, successfully kicked by Bernard Foley, sealed a 35-34 win for the Wallabies over the Scots in last year's World Cup quarter-final.

"It's another game - it's a year on," said Cotter.

"There were things that we took from that game that we felt that we could use to become better and improve."

He added: "One of those traps you can fall into is work on the principle of revenge.

"We looked at that footage straight after the game and we looked at it for a couple of games following it, but we haven't looked at it for this one.

"We analysed it and moved on. We're not preparing for the same team. They've changed, their profile has changed. Their players, we know, are very talented but we've seen tweaks and we've seen improvements to their performances so we've had to adjust and prepare differently as well.

"We can't go and do what we did a year ago.

"They've moved on a lot since then. They've put 30 points on Wales. They're coming here with a lot of confidence."

Cotter has named debutant Allan Dell in his line-up for Saturday's Test, with hooker Ross Ford winning his 100th cap and Zander Fagerson completing the front row in what will be his second Scotland appearance.

Flanker Hamish Watson wins his third cap.

"I say 'well done'," Cotter said of Ford.

"He's been a stand-out performer for Scotland in the front row and his experience will be vital with the front row that's going out there with him.

"It's nice to see an old head like that playing his 100th game and he's putting his arms around one guy that's playing his first and the other's just having his second.

"That's what the game's about - bringing these people together. You've got the two Gray brothers [Richie and Jonny] in behind.

"Everybody wants Fordy to have a good game, a memorable game for his 100th and there's a lot of determination in the group to do well.

"One of the key themes will be just looking out for each other - looking out for a guy that's having 100 games, looking out for a guy that's having his first game.

"What an opportunity for Hamish. Home game, starts at seven against [Michael] Hooper and [David] Pocock, it doesn't get much better than that."
