England 37-21 South Africa: Eddie Jones sees progress after early 'ill discipline'

England head coach Eddie Jones bemoaned his side's initial "ill discipline" but was ultimately pleased with their "good moments" as they beat South Africa.

England conceded six penalties in the opening 20 minutes at Twickenham, but eventually secured a 37-21 victory.

It was the side's 10th successive win under Jones, and their first over the Springboks in 10 years.

"There were some nice attacks and robust defence. We are pleased with our progress today," said Jones.

England had gone 12 meetings without beating South Africa, but ended that sequence with an emphatic win in London, led by influential scrum-half Ben Youngs and Saracens centre Owen Farrell, who scored 19 points.

England have won the Grand Slam and whitewashed Australia in a Test series since Jones' appointment just under a year ago.

The Australian said: "The first 20 minutes was very scratchy. We showed ill discipline and were loose with the ball, but in the next 60 we had some good moments. Defensively, we did not give them much of the gain line and cut out a lot of their game, which is based on momentum.

"We expected to play some good rugby. We had a good two weeks' preparation but conditions were more difficult than they looked."

After their winning start to the autumn, England come up against Fiji next Saturday (kick-off 14:30 BST), followed by matches against Argentina and Australia.

"The most important thing is that we play better against Fiji," added Jones. "They are a dangerous side. England played against them in the World Cup and won inconclusively. We want a conclusive victory next Saturday."
