England v Argentina: Owen Farrell and Maro Itoje rested for opener

Exeter's Henry Slade will start at inside centre for England against Argentina on Saturday, with Lions duo Owen Farrell and Maro Itoje rested.

Slade starts alongside Jonathan Joseph in the midfield, while George Kruis partners Courtney Lawes at lock.

Elliot Daly has recovered from a knee injury to start on the wing.

Sam Underhill, 21, is at seven while Exeter's Sam Simmonds is line to make his debut after replacing the injured Tom Curry among the replacements.

Sale flanker Curry, 19, dislocated his wrist in training and has been ruled out for 12 weeks.

Jones described Saturday's match as "our most important game this year".

He had long hinted he would rest some of his British and Irish Lions this autumn, but while Farrell and Itoje are left out, Mako Vunipola, Dan Cole, Lawes, Kruis, Daly, Joseph and Anthony Watson all start against the Pumas.

With Farrell not involved, Slade has ousted Saracens' Alex Lozowski to start at 12. Ben Youngs and George Ford resume their half-back combination, while Watson and Mike Brown complete the back three.

Jones explained that Slade's performances on the tour of Argentina earlier this year - in which he started both Test victories- had earned him a starting slot.

"He broke into the team as a starting player and did well at 13," the Australian explained.

"Now we would like to give him the option at 12 and see if he can fulfil that role.

"I know that Mike Brown is probably one of the most criticised players in England, but, for me, he is such a good custodian. He is brilliant at looking after things at the back."

Wing Jonny May has not recovered from a hamstring problem, so Semesa Rokoduguni is named among the replacements.

Hooker Dylan Hartley again captains the side, with Jamie George, Ellis Genge and Harry Williams the replacement front-row players.

"As a squad we have been preparing for this game since our first camp in August and are excited about playing in front of 82,000 fans at Twickenham Stadium on Saturday," Jones added.

"We know that Argentina is a strong team - Rugby World Cup semi-finalists in 2015 - and we will have to be smart and play well to beat them."

The Pumas have the 35-year-old Juan Martin Hernandez at fly-half in a side captained by hooker Agustin Creevy.

Saturday's match will be the fourth time England have faced Argentina since November last year.

They have won all three of their previous encounters against the Pumas under Jones, including a 2-0 series win for a side weakened by Lions calls in Argentina in June.
