Fraser Brown: Scotland hooker extends Glasgow Warriors stay

Brown is in his fifth season with Warriors after arriving from Heriot's in 2013

Scotland hooker Fraser Brown has signed a new two-year contract with Glasgow Warriors until May 2020.

The 28-year-old follows Jonny Gray, Niko Matawalu, Ali Price and Nick Grigg in committing his future to the club.

Brown has won 29 Scotland caps since his debut in 2013, the latest in last month's autumn Test against Australia.

"Fraser is a world-class player. It's a massive boost that he has re-committed for the next two years," said Warriors assistant coach Jonathan Humphrey.

"He's an integral part of our squad and is an integral part of what we're trying to achieve going forward so we're all delighted.

"He's one of the best players over the ball, whether that's as a hooker or a back-rower. The experience and leadership that he brings is fantastic.

"Fraser loves the club, he loves the culture and he loves what Glasgow Warriors is all about and he drives that as a leader off the field day-to-day."

Brown has played 69 games for Glasgow since his arrival in 2013, following a spell out of the professional game with Heriot's, after being released by Edinburgh in 2011.

He helped Warriors to the Pro12 title in 2015, and has remained part of the squad's leadership group under new head coach Dave Rennie, as he was under Gregor Townsend.

"From the outset I was really keen to stay," Brown told BBC Scotland. "It is a really good environment, Glasgow are playing really good rugby and I love being part of the club, so it was an easy decision for me.

"We have a had a bit of disappointment in Europe this season so our sole focus now is back on the league. But it is not just about competing, it is winning the league.

"It definitely helps being at a club where our ambitions are to win things."

'Stuart is probably in prime position'

Brown established himself as Scotland's first-choice hooker during this year's Six Nations and also started the summer tour victory in Australia.

But ankle surgery on his return delayed his start to the season, and a subsequent knee injury forced him to miss the first two autumn Tests, with Edinburgh's Stuart McInally taking his chance to shine.

"Stuart has probably been playing the best rugby of his career and played really well in the autumn," Brown acknowledged.

"It will be good competition between us but there are two games over the next week and another three before the Six Nations starts.

"I think Stuart is probably in prime position at the moment because of how he performed in the autumn. But this weekend is a a good opportunity for me to play some more rugby, find a bit more form and put a bit more pressure on him."
