Joe Simpson scored Gloucester's second try against his former club in the first half at Kingsholm

Two tries from Tom Marshall and a Joe Simpson brace against his former club gave Gloucester a bonus-point win against Wasps at Kingsholm.

Damp conditions made handling difficult but the Cherry and Whites adapted better and took their chances.

Simpson, who left Wasps in the summer for Gloucester, slid through the puddles and mud for his first score.

Wasps could only register three Lima Sopoaga penalties as they lost for a second game in a row.

Gloucester have won both their opening fixtures after a narrow win at Sale last weekend, but they were far more in control of this contest after Marshall crossed for the first try.

Jason Woodward's clever offload set him free in the right corner before Simpson showed neat football skills on the floor from an interception on halfway.

He then crossed the whitewash in slightly comical fashion after losing his balance as a damp pitch, and the force of three Wasps defenders, carried him over.

That gave the hosts a 13-3 lead at the break and after two more Sopoaga penalties brought Wasps back within four points, their chances were hampered by a yellow card for Malikai Fekitoa.

The former All Black was sin-binned for striking an opponent with his shoulder at the base of a ruck and the man advantage allowed Simpson to notch his second try when Ruan Ackermann's burst set him free to finish under the posts.

Marshall completed his brace as the spaces opened up out wide in the closing stages, much to the delight of the capacity crowd.

A tough start to the season for Wasps continued following a home defeat by London Irish last weekend.

Gloucester defence coach Jonny Bell:

"We knew how good a player Joe Simpson is from having to coach against him for a number of years.

"He has fitted in seamlessly and he was really up for it today as he wanted to be on the right side of the scoreline.

"Their yellow card released the pressure on us, but in these conditions we would have been happy if we'd won 6-0.

"So to get a bonus point was a real credit to the boys as they were clinical in taking their opportunities."

Wasps director of rugby Dai Young:

"I thought we more than matched them in every area, but two crucial moments went their way.

"We gave away seven points just before half-time and then we picked up a yellow card when we were getting a bit of ascendancy by battering away at their line.

"I've no complaints about the yellow card, but it stopped our momentum and another poor kick gave them another opportunity to score.

"The scoreboard was a little bit unkind to us and we are not too far away."
