Two penalties inside the final seven minutes from replacement Jaco van der Walt kicked Edinburgh to victory at Wasps and knocked the Premiership club out of the European Challenge Cup.

Wasps had to win to keep their hopes alive and led with Nizaam Carr's try.

But they were kept pointless in the second half as Van der Walt's first kick brought Edinburgh within a point.

And with two minutes remaining, Wasps were penalised at a ruck and Van der Walt stepped up to win the game.

The result leaves Dai Young's side with only one win from four games and 10 points behind Edinburgh in second, who they now cannot overtake after losing both fixtures between the sides.

The Scottish club are just a point behind Bordeaux at the top of the pool and have the most points of the second-placed teams.

They trailed shortly before half-time as a neat offload from captain Thomas Young sent Carr in to score for Wasps but Edinburgh found territory in the second half and when Josh Bassett was sin-binned, the home side were forced to see the match out with 14 men.

The visitors squandered two try-scoring chances before Van der Walt was given a penalty in front of the posts, and with a minute left Wasps were again penalised - this time for going in at the side of a ruck - which handed the South African the chance to steal the match.

Wasps director of rugby Dai Young told BBC Coventry and Warwickshire:

"You have to score more than seven points at home to win a game, simple as that.

"We had a lot of possession first half and a lot of opportunities when we could have kept the scoreboard kicking over.

"The effort and commitment was excellent from the players but fundamentally you have to score more points and get some scoreboard pressure."
