Billy Twelvetrees scored 20 points for Gloucester

Gloucester bounced back impressively from a tame opening-round defeat at Leicester to score five tries and beat Wasps at Kingsholm.

Hooker Jack Singleton was driven over before Matt Garvey extended the lead.

Joe Simpson and Jason Woodward scored when Wasps were down to 14 men, then Billy Twelvetrees picked off Charlie Atkinson's pass to confirm victory.

But Wasps rallied and replacement winger Paolo Odogwu scored two late tries to steal a losing bonus point.

Until then it was a chastening day for last month's 2019-20 Premiership finalists, who were unconvincing in a 23-20 win over injury-hit Bristol in round one.

They scored the day's opening try when an overthrown line-out bounced kindly for Michael le Bourgeois to dive over.

Alfie Barbeary's second-half try, his fifth in seven matches, kept them in touch at 16-12, but Gloucester quickly took the game away.

Scrum-half Sam Wolstenholme's direct kick to touch gave Gloucester an attacking line-out near the Wasps 22 and they set up a driving maul from which Garvey peeled off to run in almost unopposed.

Levi Douglas was then sent to the sin-bin for cynically going off his feet at a ruck and the Cherry and Whites scored twice with him off the field.

Fly-half Lloyd Evans took an up-and-under 30 metres from his own line and raced through a hole into the Wasps half, passed outside to Twelvetrees whose offload allowed Simpson to score.

Woodward's neat finish and Twelvetrees' interception put the game beyond Wasps' reach but they still took something from Kingsholm, where they have not won since 2014.

Odogwu ran a good line to burst over from close range before taking a cross-field kick on the right touchline to muscle his way over for Wasps' fourth try.

Gloucester head coach George Skivington:

"It was a tough week last week and we needed to show a lot of energy, which we did. We caught a few more balls and kicked a bit better and we cut out a lot of our errors.

"Our defence was outstanding and the boys were hungry to make tackles as Wasps are a massive attacking threat.

"Danny [Cipriani] was unable to train on Monday and Tuesday, as was Lewis Ludlow, so both were left out and Lewis was extremely disappointed not to play. In Danny's absence I thought Lloyd Evans did a great job today."

Wasps director of rugby Lee Blackett:

"The only pleasing aspect of the game was our character and fight at the end to get a losing bonus point. It may not seem much at this stage but it may turn out to be vital at the end of the season as it proved for England in the Six Nations last season.

"Paolo [Odogwu] has really impressed in training and he deserved his opportunity, so we threw him on early and he made a difference.

"Injuries to some our forwards before the interval didn't help but Alfie [Barbeary] again impressed. His ball-carrying was excellent and I'm pretty pleased with him but there is still plenty for him to improve on."
