European Challenge Cup Pool A:

Newcastle (3) 10

Try: Stuart Con: Thomas Pen: Thomas

Cardiff (26) 47

Tries: Adams 2, Priestland, Lane, Carre, Grady, penalty try Cons: Priestland 5

Cardiff sealed a second successive European Challenge Cup win as they scored seven tries at Newcastle.

All four first-half tries tries came from Wales internationals as wings Josh Adams and Owen Lane, stand-off Rhys Priestland and prop Rhys Carre crossed.

Adams added a second after the break, while Mason Grady and a penalty try added to Cardiff's tally.

Newcastle replied with a try from scrum-half Sam Stuart, while Welsh fly-half Josh Thomas kicked two goals.

Priestland kicked five conversions for a personal 15-point haul.

Lane was making his first appearance of the season after an ankle injury, one of seven changes to Cardiff's opening 41-0 win against Brive.

Falcons made nine changes to the side beaten 22-8 by Connacht but were outplayed as they suffered a second straight defeat.

They are back in action in the Premiership on Friday (23 December, 19:45 GMT) when they host Sale.

Dai Young's Cardiff have three more days to recover for the Boxing Day United Rugby Championship derby with Dragons at Rodney Parade.

The return Challenge Cup game is at Cardiff Arms Park on Sunday, 15 January.

Cardiff captain Josh Turnbull said:

"I was really pleased with the way we started the game, our driving maul and scrum really got going and gave us field position to score.

"In back to back weeks we've stepped up, we've spoken all week about creating the ball for the backs to play with, we scored a few more in the second half and it was from the platform the forwards set.

"It (Europe) has gone to plan so far, but we're not talking about anything further than these four pool games although we've put ourselves in the best position possible."

Newcastle coach Dave Walder said:

"We were beaten by the better side, a very experienced side full of internationals. We were disappointed with the first half, we spoke about what we needed to fix and we started the second half well.

"But they got into our 22 maybe four times more than we did, but came away with 47 points and we came away with 10 points, so what we were doing in our 22 and their 22 wasn't good enough.

"Our players have got game-time, we've got experience against an international-heavy team so guys realise how big a step up it can be. Hopefully it'll be short-term pain for long-term gain."
