Former Jersey Reds scrum-half James Mitchell has been named as Jersey RFC's new backs and attack coach.

The 28-year-old replaces former Reds team-mate Brendan Owen who is leaving the island after Reds announced they would cease trading.

Mitchell, who already coaches the amateur side's youth team, is staying on in Jersey and is set to also play for the amateur side based at St Peter.

Plans to liquidate the Championship champions were unveiled last week.

"We are excited Mitch has come onboard after deciding to stay on the island," said Jersey head coach Myles Landick.

"He's very knowledgeable and is extremely passionate about developing our talented squad."

He is the latest player from the Reds to have decided on their future - fellow scrum-half James Elliot has re-joined Newcastle Falcons while prop Stevie Longwell is joining Italian side Zebre.

Centre Dan Barnes has agreed to play for Channel Island rivals Guernsey Raiders while winger Ben Woollett has joined Leicester Tigers and lock John Hawkins has moved to Newcastle Falcons.
