Jac Morgan has told the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) he will leave professional domestic rugby in Wales if Ospreys cease to exist.

Ospreys say the Wales and British and Irish Lions flanker has warned the governing body, which is considering cutting the number of professional teams.

Ospreys' supporters were told of Morgan's intentions at a fans meeting this week to discuss the hugely controversial proposals, that could see two of Ospreys, Scarlets, Dragons and Cardiff cut.

Morgan, the only Welsh player to be involved in the Lions series against Australia this summer, is the highest profile player to address a threat to his club by stating he only wants to play for Ospreys.

The 25-year-old, named Wales men's player of the year last week, is out of contract at the end of the 2025-26 season. Morgan joined Ospreys from Scarlets in 2021.

The WRU has said cutting the number of regions to two is the "radical solution" needed to improve the state of the domestic game in Wales.

But other funding models are being considered as the governing body undergoes a consultation with players, fans and stakeholders, which ends on 30 September.

The Welsh Rugby Players Association (WRPA) has told the WRU its proposals for the elite game would "drive talent to leave Wales".

Morgan is the most influential Welsh player currently and a candidate, alongside Dewi Lake, to captain Wales in November's autumn internationals.

A final decision on whether two teams will be cut will be made by the end of October when the WRU unveils its final decision.

'Jac has a lot of integrity'

Head coach Mark Jones stated Morgan was an "honest lad" who loved the Ospreys.

"Jac has got a hell of a lot of integrity," said Jones.

"He hasn't said that to me officially [about the Ospreys], but if he has, that shows just how much he loves the Ospreys and his team-mates. He's got to be commended for that if he's said it.

"Welsh rugby and the Ospreys would love to have Jac in this team for many years, the team would be better for it."

Jones also confirmed Morgan will captain the side again this season with Lake acting as his Ospreys vice-captain.

"Those two have done it before," said Jones.

"They're a great compliment for each other.

"We've got a great experienced leadership group as well. We're very fortunate to have two guys like that with the support behind them."

Morgan will miss the opening match of the season against Bulls in Pretoria on Saturday as he continues his pre-season preparations following his exploits with the Lions in Australia.

Lake will captain the side in his absence in South Africa with Morgan arriving in the country before the second game against Stormers in Cape Town on Friday, 3 October.
