Gregor Townsend says Scotland "have to be able to cope with injuries" after losing Sione Tuipulotu for the Six Nations.

Rory Darge and Finn Russell will step in as co-captains with Tuipulotu to have pectoral muscle surgery. The Glasgow Warriors centre is expected back by the end of the domestic season, keeping his British and Irish Lions hopes alive.

"It's more the blow for him," said Townsend. "We really feel for him.

"We had three players that got injured and, when it's so close to the tournament, it's obviously really disappointing.

"For the team, you have to be able to cope with injuries. They're going to happen leading up to a tournament, but also they're going to happen within the tournament."

Townsend added: "I feel the depth we have in our squad is stronger than ever.

"Whoever comes in and wears the 13 jersey, it's a great opportunity for them and we believe they can help the team win."

Glasgow flanker Darge, who has previously acted as Scotland co-captain, said: "I'm gutted for Sione.

"We've lost a few others through injury. Sione, in particular, was in almost difficult to believe form, just every week, showing up and delivering.

"We're a settled group now. The general feeling around camp is one of excitement and belief."

Meanwhile, wing Arron Reed has been called up to the Scotland squad after Sale team-mate and front row Dylan Richardson was ruled out of the Six Nations with a shoulder injury.
