FT: Glasgow win the URC Grand Final

A long, long URC season comes to an end with Glasgow living up to their name as Warriors and winning the Championship.

They did it the hard way - down in Pretoria, in front of 50,000 fans, 13-0 down after 40 minutes. Not many would have given them a sniff at that point.

But that second-half will go down in history. Two tries, a ferocious defensive set, and a physicality that dominated a giant South African pack.

Fair play Glasgow, it was always entertaining.

    Until next season!

Franco's favourite phrase is 'trust in plan' or 'I have a plan' but they do. They just have complete belief in what they're doing and it looks like madness at times but they believe in what they're doing and how they play.

I think they concede the least amount of tries in the league and we saw that today. It's not a one-off. When you win a quarter and a semi-final, it's not a one off.

Everything from this season and last season layers into that belief and the power that comes through the squad.

  4. Venter leads Glasgow to victorypublished at 20:02 British Summer Time 22 June

    FT: Bulls 16-21 Glasgow Warriors

    Peter Wright
    Former Scotland prop on Sportsound

I think Henco Venter was out to prove a point. I've seen him play a few times and he's been pretty consistent, but tonight the period he was on the pitch I think he was the best player on the park. Defensively he was outstanding, when he was ball carrying, Bulls couldn't get him on the ground.

He was a real beast of a guy tonight. He epitomises what Glasgow are all about, he's a squad player and he performs every single time when he's on the pitch. He doesn't get a lot of game time but when he does he can make a real difference.

Glasgow's strength is their players perform. The 23 players in the squad did their job today. To concede one try last week and one again tonight, both away from home, is an incredible effort and they won the games on defence.

Amazing, honestly I don't have any words, what an incredible sight. What an achievement to go across to South Africa and win like they did. Everyone involved in the team.

I think Stafford McDowall played every single minute of the regular season bar eight minutes and hasn't played a single minute of the play offs but for guys like him, injured and not playing, it is an unbelievable effort from everyone.

    John Barclay
Former Scotland captain on Premier Sports

There's this suggestion looking at Scotland in the Six Nations there was an issue.

This proves there's been a shift, or that isn't the case. They've done it the hard way.

You can't look at that team and say it's a soft team mentally, and it's the bulk of the Scotland team.

Glasgow Warriors managing director, and 2015 league champion, Al Kellock tells Premier Sports: "Everybody back home as well, we've got to remember so many people couldn't be here that have made this season incredibly special. Those boys left everything out there.

"That was special but this is better. There's so much heart and soul out there. It's all about now and the now was outstanding.

"This was always going to be hard. In the first half, I was in bits. This is such a good league with quality teams and players, this is an unbelievable achievement.

"Matt Fagerson, for me, kept us in that. That was his best performance in a Glasgow shirt. That's a high standard by his account."

  10. More to come from Glasgow, says Smithpublished at 19:43 British Summer Time 22 June

    FT: Bulls 16-21 Glasgow Warriors

Winning head coach Franco Smith tells Premier Sports: "The boys have played well tonight, bought in. The half time chat was easy. We knew we had a good plan for the second half. We let them in through our own errors, like last week. They stuck to the script.

"There's a lot to be said about the hard edge of the European teams and we brought it tonight, especially in the last 10-15 minutes. We defended our line well and applied a lot of pressure to the maul. The boys fronted up to a very strong South African team with 50,000 people behind them. They can be very proud.

"This team shouldn't be done after tonight. We've got the building blocks to go further still.

"I promised the boys we'd have a wee dram and a cigar. We'll enjoy that tonight."

  11. Wright praises young Gunspublished at 19:38 British Summer Time 22 June

    Peter Wright

You've got to try and develop your team and the weakness the previous coach [Danny Wilson] had was that he was playing to win the next game and you can't do it when you've got a young team. You've got to find ways to fit them into the squad.

That's what Franco Smith has done. The likes of Max Williamson, Jamie Dobie, the young players. Stafford McDowall was never really getting game time under Wilson but Smith has seen something in him.

Smith has developed a team that he trusts in, that he believes in and he's happy to give guys game time and that's a massive ability to have in your squad.

  12. McKay admits 'butterflies' pre-matchpublished at 19:36 British Summer Time 22 June

    FT: Bulls 16-21 Glasgow Warriors

After a large embrace, Josh McKay tells Ryan Wilson - part of Premier Sports' coverage - about his emotions: "It's a final, there were butterflies throughout the day. I had to keep a lid on it and pop the bottle at the right time.

"These are the games you want to play. As a young kid growing up in New Zealand, you watched big games at Loftus, getting up at 04:00 to watch them. To play in one and win a final with the Glasgow brothers is unbelievable."

  13. Postpublished at 19:34 British Summer Time 22 June

Number eight Jack Dempsey had a huge game and tells Premier Sports: "I'm speechless, I'm without speech. What a game. I'm so proud of the boys.

"To come all this way after Munster last week - that was a Grand Final. Then we have to come all the way here in six days, play another Grand Final in front of 50k...

"We came here a few weeks ago and got a taste of the altitude, we knew what it felt like."

  14. 'More energy, more enthusiasm, more physical'published at 19:29 British Summer Time 22 June

    FT: Bulls 16-21 Glasgow Warriors

    John Barclay
Former Scotland captain on Premier Sports

They dominated that second half. The stats showed it, double the metres carried.

So much credit has to go to Franco Smith to turn that team around in the space of a couple of years.

They had a lot of potential but he's taken them to the next level and made them more resilient, more robust. Tactically, he's tweaked the way they played.

He said last week there will be no excuses for us not performing. Tonight, they had more energy, enthusiasm, and more physicality.

  15. 'The praise and congratulations should go to Franco Smith'published at 19:27 British Summer Time 22 June

    FT: Bulls 16-21 Glasgow Warriors

    Fraser Brown
    Former Scotland hooker on Sportsound

They've beaten the last two champions in the play-offs to be champions and then have gone to the most hostile place in the league to win it.

It's irrelevant where you finish in the regular season, they are the best team in the league by a country mile.

I don't have enough words to praise Zander [Fagerson] enough, he's an incredible player and athlete. He is Scotland's best tighthead, to go 80 is a huge effort.

The praise and congratulations should go to Franco Smith, all the coaches and players because what a job they've done in two years. This is a Glasgow side that couldn't get past 50 minutes two years ago.

I know our chief sports writer Tom English has made a big point about the Scottish national team not having enough winners in it.

They have plenty now. Jamie Bhatti, Scott Cummings, Matt Fagerson, Jack Dempsey, George Horne, Huw Jones - I could go on.

These players now know what it takes to win in the big games, to win on the road. Hopefully they take that into the next Six Nations.

Glasgow stand-off Duncan Weir celebrates his second league title: "Unbelievable. The fight, the guts, the blood, sweat and tears - we did everything tonight.

"I'm so proud to be part of this team. It'll be a good party tonight."

Yeah, fair enough Duncan. Enjoy it!

  18. 'Defensively outstanding'published at 19:19 British Summer Time 22 June

    Peter Wright
    Former Scotland prop on Sportsound

The teams they've played against - Stormers, Munster, away from home and now the Bulls. Not quite the way Munster did last season but incredible.

Glasgow were under the gun a little bit in the first half but to get the try just before half time was just what they needed.

In the second half, they pretty much dominated.

Defensively outstanding, an amazing defensive set, not just one or two but time and time again.

Warriors' try-scorer Huw Jones tells Premier Sports: "I haven't got words. It's incredible. What a shift from the boys, that's such a cliche but I don't know what to say.

"This is everything. Coming away to South Africa - we don't complain about travel. This is a tough place to play regardless.

"The Bulls were immense. What a game. We had to dig deep in those defensive sets. We pulled through and kept them out."

  20. Fagerson gets player of the match awardpublished at 19:15 British Summer Time 22 June

    FT: Bulls 16-21 Glasgow Warriors

Matt Fagerson -the Grand Final player of the match - tells Premier Sports: "Words cannot describe how we're feeling right now. It's something we've been working towards all season and to do it in a place as historic as this in front of all these fans is, I can't put it into words.

"I think in the last three or four games, we've really taken a liking to knock-out rugby in a sense of we're not overplaying the ball and when you've got a kicker like George Horne, it makes things so much easier.

"We went the hard way but we wouldn't change it for the world."
