It's a good game so far, good opening 40 minutes, the weather's held off and it's a bit more engaging than at Cardiff last night.

Ospreys are probably just squeaking it at half-time, but Toby Booth won't be happy. They've had three or four entries into Dragons 22 which they didn't convert.

Rio Dyer has been outstanding for Dragons, here's hoping for a similar second half than we had with the first.

Wales flanker Dan Lydiate has agreed a new player-coach contract at Dragons.

Lydiate, who turns 37 this season, will continue to play and is among the replacements today.

But the British and Irish Lion will also take over as a tackle area specialist among Dai Flanagan's coaching team.

Flanagan said described the move as a "natural progression" for the player.

“He’s a hugely influential individual, on and off the field, who is ready to take the next step in his career," he said.

“He has a huge amount to offer and has been coaching the squad over the summer, but with current injuries he still has an important role as a player here.”

Lydiate is among the most experienced players still performing at regional level having won 72 caps for Wales, including three Six Nations titles and three World Cup campaigns.

It's a fairly even game. Dragons started the game controlling possession and they'll be disappointed at letting Ospreys into the game a bit easily with a simple try.

Dragons will be disappointed to be behind at half-time but plenty to play for in the second half.

Of course this is not the first league match of the season for Welsh regions.

Cardiff started their 2024-25 United Rugby Championship campaign with a stuttering 22-17 win over Zebre.

Ospreys just edged an intriguing first half against a determined Dragons side who always seem to raise their game when this opponent come to Newport.

Opposing fly-halves Lloyd Evans and Dan Edwards have been accurate off the kicking tee, while Keiran Williams and Harrison Keddie have exchanged tries.

Dragons have matched their more illustrious opponents with Dane Blacker and Rio Dyer testing the visiting defence.

The hosts will be looking for more of the same in the second half.

The scoreline is a pretty fair reflection of the first half, just three points in it.

Ospreys have definitely wasted a few opportunities but Dragons have had the big-game players. Rio Dyer and Dane Blacker have made big breaks.

There will be big discussions between the coaches and the spines of their team at half time.

  8. Half-time: Dragons 13-16 Ospreyspublished at 15:46 British Summer Time 21 September

It is and they go into the shed with the visitors just ahead.

    Decent first half though.

Plenty of pushing and shoving going on here as both sets of forwards get to grips with each other. But it eventually fizzles out and that should be half-time.

Nice set-piece move from Dragons who quickly ping the ball back to hooker Brodie Coghlan just inside the touchline.

Coghlan tries to bulldoze over Ryan Conbveer but the stocky wing is having none of it.

Leon Brown follows up but Justin Tipuric bundles him into touch just short.

Jac Morgan made a real nuicance of himself at the the tackle there but he rejoined from the side and is penalised.

Who me? He asks referee Ben Shakespear. Yes you Jac!

Dragons kick to the corner. Interesting.

Ospreys look at their best when Jack Walsh steps in at first receiver.

Luke Morgan had drifted in off his wing but fails to spot Ryan Conbeer with a potential overlap.

Walsh is then tackled high by Leon Brown and Edwards nudges them ahead before the break.

That was a late decision by Dan Edwards, not sure it was the right one to go for the chip and chase as Jared Rosser was waiting for that.

But it was a silly, silly decision by Lloyd Evans to take Edwards out.

Putting pressure on Ospreys has been what's important in Dragons' game plan in the opening half an hour.

Yes Richie, it's just a shame their best player is out on the wing.

But you can see why Dai Flanagan tries to get Dyer involved as much as possible.

Rio Dyer has looked dangerous when he's got the ball, Dane Blacker is looking lively too.

A couple of half-breaks from him and a couple of gaps too, it's him and Dyer who have been the danger-men for Dragons so far.
