    George Horne

Scotland go quick at the next throw - another one that came from a US penalty. It's through the hands, first to the left and then back right.

It's Kyle Rowe who breaks the line, scampering up the pitch before finding Horne on the support line.

That was a rehearsed play that was pulled off to perfection... or was it? Did Jamie Ritchie obstruct JP Smith?

Apparently not, as Adam Hastings knocks the conversion over.

He averages a try every 117 minutes for Scotland. But is Duhan van der Merwe Scotland's greatest ever winger?

    Get voting with those thumbs.

Scotland had the ball in the corner again, but this time the maul faltered and they had to go through the hands - which didn't work.

They get the ball in the corner again, but Ewan Ashman's throw is squint. That's three lost for the hooker.

Back under way at Audi Field in Washington DC, as Jamie Ritchie is melted under the high ball.

17 seconds in, and the US drop a clanger, a handling error under no pressure from AJ MacGinty.

A quick scan of social media tells me you Scotland fans think there could have been even more penalties against the USA.

Have they been let off a little, despite the high penalty count?

The maul has been a real strength for Scotland in that first-half. It's been a tough ask for the US boys at the maul, they're struggling to stem the tide.

  7. Half-time USA 7-28 Scotlandpublished at 00:23 British Summer Time 13 July

Scotland finally get their fourth, and most likely put the game out of the sight. That will be important to Gregor Townsend after what happened six years ago in Houston.

It hasn't all been easy - but that's mainly due to the tough, humid conditions in Washington DC. There's been slips and spills from both sides, but the story of the half has really been the US' indiscipline.

They've already coughed up numerous penalties and had one yellow card. They're lucky it's not more.

Meanwhile, Ewan Ashman has profited, and perhaps quietened any clamour around Dylan Richardson becoming Scotland's replacement for George Turner.

    Ewan Ashman

Ashman towels that ball furiously, and finds Jamie Ritchie with his throw. This time, the maul breaks apart and Ashman splashes over the line to ensure Scotland finish the first half with a try.

It's a first ever hat-trick for Ashman - and all in one half.

Adam Hastings lines it up, and maintains his perfect record with the last kick of the half.

The maul is sacked again, still no third for Ewan Ashman. The Scots are inches away - do they have the composure?

They think they're over, and George Horne is furiously screaming in the face of Jordan Way. He's told to calm down, as Greg Peterson is told the next US infringement will be a yellow.

After all that, it's another penalty.

Ewan Ashman goes inches away with a pick-and-go, before the referee's arm goes up. Advantage coming, as George Horne is wrapped up and driven back.

A free shot to the corner again.

    USA 7-21 Scotland

Scotland bang it back down the pitch and it's another US mistake, this time from AJ MacGinty.

The ball is back in the corner, and under the arm of Ewan Ashman, but he's repelled and he won't have his hat-trick... yet.

  12. Missed penaltypublished at 37 mins

    USA 7-21 Scotland

Scotland's scrum is absolutely pulverised by the American pack there, perhaps reinvigorated by the return David Ainu'u - a teammate of Blair Kinghorn at Toulouse.

Jack Carty is going to attempt a monster penalty, from his own half. It looked like he'd just done his hamstring moments ago, but he's back up now.

He's got the driver out... but he's drawn it across the face to the left.

    USA 7-21 Scotland

Jamie Ritchie is the latest to spill the ball, this time on the half-way line.

There have been a lot of handling errors so far. That ball must be like a bar of soap, it's so humid out there.

USA hosting the rugby World Cup in seven years. They’re gonna need every minute to get their house in order. Scotland haven’t needed to do much to go into a 21-0 lead in less than half an hour.

    Tommaso Boni

Disaster for Scotland! Matt Fagerson picks and goes on his own five-metre line, and coughs up the ball.

AJ MacGinty picks up and almost goes over. The US regather and Tommaso Boni, the former Italian itnernational, goes over after running a great line.

A try of Scotland's own making.

Jordan Way blows his whistle - this time it's Scotland who have infringed. The US go to the corner and Audi Field comes alive.

Dylan Fawsitt fires it low and the US crash over their own feet instead of the line. The ball spurts out the side and it's a knock-on.

Just as well. Duhan van der Merwe had gathered and was threatening to go the distance.

    Ewan Ashman

It's Ashman again, as Scotland pay homage to Glasgow's party piece - a driving maul try.

It was Scott Cummings who collected at the line-out and fed Ashman for his second of the day.

Adam Hastings makes it three from three from the tee, as groundskeepers desperately try and sort the turf which has cut up badly under the scrum.

Another penalty, another kick to the corner. This time they go through the hands, Duhan van der Merwe slings a horrible-looking pass off his left, it goes to ground, but there's thankfully an advantage coming.

David Ainu’u is sent to the bin, made an example of by the referee.

I've mentioned Rory Darge a few times there. He's Scotland's co-captain today, alongside Sione Tuipulotu.

Back under way, and Rory Darge immediately strips the ball from Jack Carty on the half way line.

There's then a pause in play as Paddy Ryan screams out following a collision at the breakdown. I don't think he's happy with Alex Craig's entry.

Was that shoulder to head? Foul play, perhaps? No, says the TMO. Scrum to the USA.
