Final thoughts from England head coach Steve Borthwick: "I think the players handled themselves really well throughout that last period of the game.

"That was a tough Test match and France are an exceptional side with world-class players throughout their team and we were really tested.

"You can talk about the tries scored and there were some good tries, I think you can talk about how hard the players ran back to make tackles and save tries.

"That's a measure of how much these players care about this team."

More from England head coach Steve Borthwick: "We continue with our progress. It is part of coaching, keep clear what we are trying to work on.

"I have said it all along, we have to keep faith and have trust in these players, who are working really hard.

"They are going to be a really good team, it’s a young side but as you grow and evolve, unfortunately there is going to be some tough times and tough lessons.

"You would like everything to happen instantly, but that's not reality."

England head coach Steve Borthwick tells BBC Sport: "It doesn’t matter what you do, everyone want to see that tangible progress.

"You want the win at the end of it. The team has been progressing and we still have a lot of work to do, we know that."

Former England captain Jamie George was superb off the bench.

When the crunch came he hit his line-outs. Is that what England have been missing? Proper experience to come off the bench?

    Paul Grayson
Former England fly-half on BBC Radio 5 Live

We have been critical of England because of the way they've played and it has manifested itself.

France could have scored 50 points today, quite easily.

England made loads of mistakes and we were moaning about their kicking game.

Ultimately, it was one of those kicks that got them the penalty, which then got them in the corner.

It will be a massive relief as a group.

That's Fin Smith down to a tee, dissecting his own performance while getting the player-of-the-match medal put around his neck.

He did start like a rabbit in the headlights. Everything about him was slow and uncertain.

And then in the second half when they needed him to step up, he looked very much like the player who has been going so well for Northampton.

Smith stepped up and had the minerals to get it done.

As a Scot watching, I was astonished by just how shapeless this match was at times. France can be scintillating with ball in hand, but were very wasteful when you’d expect them to ruthlessly convert. England had a lot of admirable fight, but their decision-making and game management was absolutely perplexing at times. After what I saw tonight, tomorrow at Murrayfield starts to look like a very big moment indeed for us in this Six Nations.

    Matt Dawson

    France were scintillating at times.

They couldn't connect for the killer moment and there must have been a half-dozen opportunities where they held onto the ball.

If, buts and maybes - this is where you've got to be at top-level.

    FT: England 26-25 France

    France Rugby

France lock Emmanuel Meafou: "I think we just made one too many mistakes, a few too many turnovers and it was a bit wet out there and we dropped too many balls.

"It didn’t stick for us tonight and the English were better at keeping the possession.

"Our style of play is to kind of let the ball go, a freestyle way of playing, I think we need to be better at bringing it back to the simple things but we will learn from this game.

"We need to get rid of the fancy stuff we force and just let the play happen by itself.

"There are three games left so we will come back stronger."

I saw Elliot Daly in a petrol station over summer and thought better of going to tell him how much I love him. Regretting it now, what a top player and bloke, always doing his bit brilliantly.

Cadan Murley's foot injury against Ireland helped pave the way for Elliot Daly to come into the matchday 23.

The 32-year-old showed there is life left in him yet at international level.

Weirdly that was his first game for England since the defeat by France in the Six Nations last year.

French defence coach Shaun Edwards: "We got the oopsies, didn't we? Every time we got near the tryline we seemed to just drop the ball.

"I've never seen that happen before. The French lads are normally magnificent handlers of a rugby ball."
