Summary

  • Goosen, Price (2) & Van der Merwe with tries for Edinburgh

  • Edinburgh go top of Pool 3

  1. Half-time Vannes 17-19 Edinburghpublished at 13:50 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January

Edinburgh have shown more attacking threat in this half than they have in recent weeks, but they're only two points ahead as they keep letting Vannes back in.

There's been ill-discipline, injuries, and missed opportunities for the visitors - all bad habits that fans will be used to seeing.

Can they show the grit that secured them a victory against Glasgow? Or will the troublesome away from continue to haunt them?

  2. Postpublished at 40+2 mins

    Vannes 17-19 Edinburgh

Darcy Graham has the ball out wide, and looks to be lined up by Salesi Rayasi, but he somehow escapes like Houdini!

Edinburgh recylce and they're knocking on the door. Javan Sebastian and Pierre Schoeman are going for it.

The latter spins and looks to dot down, but he's held up! The clock is red so the chance is gone.

It's brilliant work from Gwenael Duplenne, that's a real try-saver.

  3. Postpublished at 38 mins

    Vannes 17-19 Edinburgh

That's a worry for Edinburgh. Ben Muncaster is hobbling off and it doesn't look like he'll be able to continue.

Glen Young is on, so one of the locks will have to move back to blindside.

  4. converted try

Converted try VANNES 17-19 Edinburghpublished at 37 mins

    Robin Taccola

Salesi Rayasi steps through one challenge and then fends off both Ben Healy and Ali Price.

He's finally brought down but Vannes are now deep in Edinburgh territory, knocking on the door once more. They've got an offside advantage...

But they don't need it, as they suck Edinburgh in and then go wide, with teenager Taccola diving over.

  5. Postpublished at 34 mins

    Vannes 10-19 Edinburgh

Jamie Ritchie strides off, we'll wait for confirmation if that is an HIA. Hamish Watson is on in his place.

For the time being, it's a Vannes scrum on the edge of the Edinburgh 22m.

  6. converted try

Converted try Vannes 10-19 EDINBURGHpublished at 28 mins

    Ali Price

It's another superb try from Edinburgh!

James Lang is the centre causing problems this time, putting Darcy Graham away on the right wing. Graham feeds it back inside to Lang, who then finds the supporting Price.

A very Glasgow-esque try from Edinburgh, dare I say.

    Healy nails the kick.

  7. converted try

Converted try VANNES 10-12 Edinburghpublished at 26 mins

    Joe Edwards

The try is given after a lengthy TMO review!

It looks like it had struck the base of the post, but after a secondary shove Edwards and the ball were squeezed onto the whitewash.

The kick is straightforward and Vannes are just two points behind.

  8. Postpublished at 25 mins

    Vannes 3-12 Edinburgh

Jules Le Bail spots a gap after the ball comes lose and is held up inches short. Vannes try to go short again through Joe Edwards, aiming for the base of the post, but the referee suggests they're held up.

The TMO is having a look...

  9. Postpublished at 22m

    Vannes 3-12 Edinburgh

The first bit of sustained pressure from Vannes as a penalty to touch puts them in Edinburgh's 22m.

They're rumbling through the phases, holding onto the ball well, and they win an advantage after a high shot from Pierre Schoeman.

    Scrum called, 10m out.

  10. converted try

Converted try Vannes 3-12 Edinburghpublished at 17 mins

    Ali Price

    Edinburgh respond quickly!

It comes from a brilliant dummy and delayed pass from Matt Currie, which puts Darcy Graham away.

With one last man, he pops inside to Price. Much more like it.

Healy nails the kick. His first from three attempts.

  11. Penalty Vannes 3-5 Edinburghpublished at 15 mins

    Jules Le Bail

Edinburgh concede a breakdown penalty straight in front of the sticks, just outside their own 22m. Those are the coach killers.

    Le Bail slots it.

  12. try

Try Vannes 0-5 EDINBURGHpublished at 7 mins

    Wes Goosen

    Edinburgh strike first!

The visitors are piling the pressure on and win a penalty on the 5m line. Pierre Schoeman taps and goes, but he's held short. Advantage is coming, Ali Price hurls it wide and Goosen strolls over.

    Healy then misses the conversion.

  13. Postpublished at 6 mins

    Vannes 0-0 Edinburgh

Edinburgh have got ball in hand and dare I say, they're trying to play. Pierre Schoeman carries to the edge of the 22m but it's a brilliant breakdown from fly-half Jean Cotarmanac'h Vannes and he forces the turnover.

You're the 10, Jean! What are you doing in there?!

  14. Missed penaltypublished at 3 mins

    Vannes 0-0 Edinburgh

Edinburgh win a penalty just inside the Vannes half, and their reaction gives us an indication of today's game plan.

They point to the sticks, and Ben Healy calls for the tee. He lines it up from 50-odd metres... and drags it wide.

  15. Kick-offpublished at 13:01 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January

    Vannes 0-0 Edinburgh

It was Matt Currie who led the sides out, by his lonesome. That's because today is his 50th Edinburgh appearance.

The visitors are in their bright orange strips. The hosts, Vannes, are in a lovely turquoise number.

Federico Vedovelli is the referee and he blows his whistle. Away we go!

    Vannes v Edinburgh (13:00)

There's an old fella out there with a microphone singing, and the Vannes fans are chanting along with him.

The stadium is absolutely packed as well. It looks a beautiful sunny day in northern France, although I'm told it's only around 7° pitchside.

The flags are waving, the teams are out, and we'll be under way shortly.

  17. How are Vannes travelling?published at 12:55 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January

    Vannes v Edinburgh (13:00)

Vannes are bottom of the Top 14 and haven't enjoyed much success this season, although they did dismantle a second-string Gloucester side in December to record their only European win so far.

Both Enzo Benmegal and Michael Ruru scored twice with Karl Chateau and Cyril Blanchard adding extras. None of them play today.

They've also picked up an away again La Rochelle in the league and that was a side that included Uini Atonio, Will Skelton, Jonathan Danty and Jack Nowell.

  18. Edinburgh's European record makes grim readingpublished at 12:52 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January

    Vannes v Edinburgh (13:00)

It's been 10 years since Edinburgh made it to the Challenge Cup final, where they lost narrowly to Gloucester.

They haven't come close since, reaching five quarter-finals since but not progressing once.

It's the first time Edinburgh have ever played Vannes, and they have only won once on the road in the last 11 months.

When comparing the two teams on paper, this presents a great chance to end the poor away form.

  19. Can Edinburgh turn up on the road?published at 12:48 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January

    Vannes v Edinburgh (13:00)

Edinburgh have lost all five of their away games so far this season and after a defiant win over Glasgow at Murrayfield, Sean Everitt's away problem seemed even more headscratching.

They can beat the URC champions at home, grind out a win and show some pride. But just six days before that at Hampden, they were eviscerated and embarrassed.

What Edinburgh will show up today? Who knows. But Everitt needs to buck the trend of away losses and get some credit back in the bank.

  20. Vannes blend experience and youthpublished at 12:45 Greenwich Mean Time 11 January

    Vannes v Edinburgh (13:00)

Vannes are bottom of the Top 14 table and that is reflected in the European team. 19-year-olds Robin Taccola and Jean Cotarmanac'h start at inside centre and fly-half respectively, but they are surrounded by experience.

37-year-old Paga Tafili starts at loosehead, with New Zealander Joe Edwards captaining at number eight.

Italy scrum-half Stephen Varney is named on the bench alongside centre Tani Vili who was called up to the French national team in the summer of 2022 but didn't make an appearance.

There's no rex-England prop Mako Vunipola, or former Edinburgh lock Anton Bresler. Similarly, there's no place for Scots duo Hamish Bain and Rudi Brown.
