Seaton and McGovern win gold

Irish pair Matt McGovern and Ryan Seaton have clinched the 49er title at the Sail for Gold event in Weymouth.

Bangor man McGovern and Carrickfergus sailor Seaton secured the title by finishing third and second in Thursday's two medal races.

The Ulster pair had moved from sixth place to third by earning top-three finishes in Tuesday's four races.

Bad weather prevented any racing on Wednesday but the Irish duo clinched gold on Thursday after a delayed start.

The Irish duo held an overnight lead of six points but could have been overtaken by any of the top 10 as three double point races were scheduled.

In the event only two races were possible on Thursday as the Ulster men completed a breakthrough performance by beating numerous world and European medallists.

McGovern and Seaton finished 14th at last year's London Olympics.

Meanwhile, Dubliner Annalise Murphy took bronze in the Radial Class in Weymouth after winning Thursday's medal race.

Murphy, who heartbreakingly missed out on an Olympic medal last year after leading the class for nearly all the event, finished behind two Chinese competitors.
