GB's Scott takes SailGP Canada title for first win

Two-time Olympic champion Giles Scott has guided Great Britain's SailGP team to its third victory of the season.

With high winds in Canada helping boats reach speeds approaching 60mph, Scott emerged triumphant for the first time since replacing Sir Ben Ainslie as driver in January.

The British boat finished in the top three of both fleet races and claimed the winner-takes-all final ahead of France and Denmark to claim the maximum 10 points.

"A win at any league event is huge and certainly for me, personally, to come off the back of a pretty frustrating apprenticeship in SailGP,” said Scott.

"To come out with a win here is massive and it's nice to be able to put a marker down and prove that you're capable of winning.”

It was the team's first victory since September in the 13-event competition, which pits identical 50-foot flying catamarans against each other.

The win lifts them to sixth in the overall standings with two regattas remaining.

Australia, currently third in the season's overall standings and 13 points ahead of Britain, capsized on Sunday after they faced a "technical malfunction" during the race, according to skipper Tom Slingsby.

The teams head to New York for the next event from 22-23 June, with the $2m final being held in San Francisco from 13-14 July.
