World Snooker Championship 2014: Poomjaeng to face Doherty
- Published
Crucible crowd favourite Dechawat Poomjaeng will face 1997 world champion Ken Doherty in final qualifying for this year's World Championship.
The Thai world number 51 beat Craig Steadman, conqueror of Steve Davis, 10-6 to move within one win of a return to snooker's biggest stage.
He will play Irishman Doherty, now ranked 28, on Tuesday.
Poomjaeng shocked Scot Stephen Maguire at the Crucible last year and endeared himself to the crowd with his antics.
Maguire, then the world number five, said he didn't think Poomjaeng was "the full shilling" after the Thai applauded his own shots, willed Maguire's to miss and spilled a bottle of water mid-frame.
Also through to the final qualifying round is Welshman Jamie Jones, a Crucible quarter-finalist in 2012, who beat Indian Aditya Mehta 10-5 to secure a final qualifier against world number 22 Michael Holt.
Two-time world champion Mark Williams, who has dropped to 18 in the rankings, will play Alan McManus after the Scot beat Peter Lines 10-8.
The 2006 world champion Graeme Dott will face world number 89 Kyren Wilson after the Kettering-based cueman beat Alfie Burden 10-3.
But young Belgian Luca Brecel, who became the youngest player ever to compete at the Crucible as a 17-year-old two years, was thrashed 10-1 by Leicester professional Tom Ford. He will now face two-time Crucible runner-up Matthew Stevens on Tuesday.
