2005 world champion on BBC Four

Mark Selby looks very frustrated to me as he sits in his chair. I've known him for 30-odd years.

I can sympathise with him because this is the biggest tournament of the year for every player, you look forward to it and he is many people's tip for the title this year.

To be let down by your equipment is very frustrating.

Those tip concerns that affected Selby during the first session appear to be continuing this evening.

After a safety exchange, John Higgins cuts the final red into the middle pocket and wins the fourth frame to take a 3-1 lead into the mid-session interval.

    Selby 5-6 Woollaston

During another fairly lengthy frame, Ben Woollaston looks for all the world to be favourite for it when he floats in a dreamy red to the middle with the cue ball tight on the cushion.

But then the world number 44 misses a straight red a few moments later and now Mark Selby has a chance to level it up again - albeit with three of the six colours in relatively safe positions.

Dave: Big Leicester themes today with Jamie Vardy first and now Mark Selby and Ben Woollaston. Vardy and co taught us never to underestimate any opponent but I think Mr Predictable, Mark Selby, will see this tussle through.

If you missed the football news earlier, former England striker Jamie Vardy will be leaving relegated Leicester City at the end of the season after 13 years with the Foxes.

    Higgins 2-1 Xiao

John Higgins will have been a little nervous in his seat watching Xiao Guodong eat away at his 54-point lead in frame four.

But Xiao misses a relatively easy red to the corner as he attempts to pinch the frame. There was still plenty of work to do from there, but Xiao can't afford to miss too many of those chances against a player of Higgins' calibre.

The frame isn't over, though - one red left on the table.

    Selby 5-6 Woollaston

There's a treasure trove of equipment hidden beneath a snooker table - judging by this image, it looks like Ben Woollaston used most of it to pot a red early in the previous frame.

  7. Woollaston in frontpublished at 20:10 British Summer Time 24 April

    Selby 5-6 Woollaston

Mark Selby is known as one of the great tacticians of snooker and there are few players you would back more to win a scrappy frame than the "Jester from Leicester".

But it's Ben Woollaston who gets the better of this one and the world number 44 now leads 6-5.

Ten is the magic number needed for victory.

Matt: For me, what is interesting about this championship is there have been some real surprises already and we are still really early on. I’d love to see Ronnie win, I really would, but there are others ready and waiting to contend!

  9. Higgins leadspublished at 20:03 British Summer Time 24 April

    Higgins 2-1 Xiao

John Higgins is 31 points up when he misses a pink to the corner.

Xiao Guodong is tempted by a red that's been left, although he has to swerve around the blue to get to it... and Xiao can't avoid the blue.

So Higgins is back and makes a 62 break, which is more than enough to take the lead for the first time in this second-round match, which is the best of 25 frames.

  10. Postpublished at 20:00 British Summer Time 24 April

    Selby 5-5 Woollaston

Only two points separate the two players with three reds left on the table. It's been more than six minutes since the most recent pot in a frame that is approaching 30 minutes in length.

  11. 'Higgins a savage scorer'published at 19:52 British Summer Time 24 April

    Higgins 1-1 Xiao

    Stephen Hendry
Seven-time world champion on BBC Sport

He's been an absolutely savage scorer throughout his career, John Higgins.

There's a lot of talk and rightly so about his all-round game and his tactical game and his shot choices under pressure, but to me it's his scoring that's been the bedrock of his success.

That and making winning clearances when he's been 50-60 behind.

  12. Anything you can do...published at 19:50 British Summer Time 24 April

    Higgins 1-1 Xiao

It's a feast of scoring so far in this second-round match.

Higgins is left half a chance by Xiao, a cut to the corner, and from that he conjures a total clearance of 131.

    That'll settle the nerves nicely.

  13. Postpublished at 19:46 British Summer Time 24 April

    Selby 5-5 Woollaston

A couple of uncharacteristic errors early on in this session by Mark Selby.

There was a missed pink in the 10th frame which he would expect to get 99 times out of 100, then in frame 11 he runs out of position when potting the blue and it seemed easier to land on a red rather than not.

    End of break.

Feeling inspired by the action in Sheffield?

Well, just outside the Crucible you can head over to the Cue Zone and try your hand at snooker on some mini tables.

If that's not for you, you can always head across the plaza to watch the professionals in action on a massive screen while sitting in a deckchair.

    The choice is yours.

    Selby 5-5 Woollaston

    Ken Doherty

Ben hasn't played here for well over 10 years. He looks very relaxed and very comfortable.

Sometimes when you're playing a friend, even though he [Selby] is 40 places above you, the fear factor is not there as much. That is quite important and maybe helps Ben in this match.

Then he has to deal with everything else - the Crucible nerves and stuff like that - but at the moment he's coping really well.

  16. Strong start from Xiaopublished at 19:32 British Summer Time 24 April

    Higgins 0-1 Xiao

What an impressive opening frame from Xiao Guodong, who pounces on a weak safety shot from John Higgins.

A break of 92 from Xiao begins with a testing red after Higgins leaves the cue ball near a middle pocket.

He misses out on a century, rattling the final red around the jaws of a corner pocket, but it hardly matters with the frame safely wrapped up.

  17. Woollaston levelspublished at 19:31 British Summer Time 24 April

    Selby 5-5 Woollaston

Ben Woollaston knocks in the last red on the table and that will secure the first frame of the evening.

    All square.

    Woollaston escapes - great shot.

  19. Postpublished at 19:28 British Summer Time 24 April

    Selby 5-4 Woollaston

A 58 break from Ben Woollaston leaves him 46 ahead with 43 available.

Mark Selby needs a snooker, but one of the two remaining reds is in an inviting position by the pink and near the side cushion.

When Selby then knocks in a long red and the black, you know what's coming... Woollaston put tight behind the pink and in trouble.

  20. Postpublished at 19:23 British Summer Time 24 April

    Selby 5-4 Woollaston

Mark Selby gets in first but then misses a straightforward pink to the right middle.

World number 44 Ben Woollaston knocks in a superb long red to the top-left corner and sets about trying to make a frame-winning contribution.
