Did anyone actually believe Ronnie when he said he wasn't ready? Mind games.

O'Sullivan 3-1 Carter
Kyren Wilson
2024 World Championship winner on BBC TV
Ronnie O'Sullivan will be feeding off how Ali Carter is playing.
He has been out in Saudi Arabia playing at his academy out there and it was leaked that he had a 147 out there but there is nothing like going out into the bear pit of the World Championship, with all eyes on you and the pressure taking hold. It is a totally different game but he looks settled now.
Ding 7-6 Surety
Crucible debutant Zak Surety has come out of the blocks firing against world number 10 Ding Junhui.
The Englishman takes the 13th frame with a break of 110 to narrow the deficit to 7-6.
That's a third century in four frames this afternoon for Surety. Sure by name, sure by nature.
O'Sullivan 3-1 Carter
Steve Davis
Six-time world champion on BBC Two
That was tough for Ali. The dynamic that it's an easier Ronnie O'Sullivan to play is the worst idea. Regardless he did not do his job well enough in that mini session.
Ronnie broke free of the shackles and all of a sudden was on 16 seconds a shot. He is playing with more fluency around the shot.
He is floating around the table like the Ronnie O'Sullivan that made a 147 in just over five minutes. That's the Ronnie O'Sullivan that coaches cannot teach.

Unusual to see the handshake before the game but a great gesture all the same from the old rivals. Great sign of respect.

O'Sullivan 3-1 Carter
Ronnie O'Sullivan is going through the gears now. He is currently on a break of 82 and heading towards a century...
Up comes the ton and he ends up with a superb 107.
That's the 1,283rd century of his career and his 208th at the Crucible.
Ali Carter's top break so far is 41.
O'Sullivan 2-1 Carter
Stephen Hendry
Seven-time world champion on BBC Two
Ali Carter is simmering. Sometimes when he is frustrated and angry that can transmit into good play. Sometimes he loses his composure.
O'Sullivan 2-1 Carter
Ali Carter swerves round the brown to pot a long red but a couple of shots later he is again out of position.
Ronnie O'Sullivan could have a chance to grab a 3-1 lead at the mid-session interval here.
O'Sullivan 2-1 Carter
Stephen Hendry
Seven-time world champion on BBC Two
Ali Carter's game has gone very ragged. That last shot. That is what you see amateurs do.
O'Sullivan 2-1 Carter
Ali Carter goes in off the blue. He was trying to play safe by coming off the cushion from the pack to get back up to baulk.
O'Sullivan 2-1 Carter
Michael Emons
BBC Sport at the Crucible Theatre
The Crucible only holds just under 1,000 people, meaning tickets are like gold dust.
If you're not able to get into the arena, then the next best option is just outside the venue where you can go into the fan zone and watch all the action on a massive screen.
It's a lovely afternoon in Sheffield so you've done well if you've bagged yourself one of the deckchairs.
Before this afternoon's session, there was also an extra attraction as you could get a picture with the World Championship trophy and 1980 champion Cliff Thorburn, who beat Alex Higgins 18-16 in a great final.
O'Sullivan 2-1 Carter
John Virgo
1979 UK Championship winner on BBC Two
Ali's had plenty of chances but he's just not punishing Ronnie.
O'Sullivan 2-1 Carter
Steve Davis
Six-time world champion on BBC Two
The positional play has been pretty ropey and Ali has shown enough weakness that Ronnie O'Sullivan has been able to calm down and relax.
It is the power struggle of how much table time you are getting. Ronnie is getting enough to be able to relax in the venue.
O'Sullivan 2-1 Carter
More like it from Ronnie O'Sullivan the seven-time champion until he misses another one of those shots along the bottom cushion.
Ali Carter fluffs his lines with a poor shot when knocking in the red that leaves him needing the rest on the black.
With another run of 28, 'The Rocket' goes ahead.
Emotional Higgins is hugged by BBC presenter after match
An emotional John Higgins says he "was in tears" on the morning of his first round match at the World Snooker Championship.
Higgins' father-in-law suffered a heart attack last week and BBC Snooker presenter Seema Jaswal consoled the player after his 10-7 win against Joe O'Connor on Monday.

Looking forward to following the action on the BBC having been at the Crucible in-person last night to see John Higgins battle through. I was sat some ten rows back but had an amazing view - there truly is no venue quite like it!
Che Seabourne, West Bridgford, Notts.
O'Sullivan 1-1 Carter
Neither player looks settled yet. Ronnie O'Sullivan misses a black to the bottom left corner and Ali Carter can't fully take advantage, breaking down on 23 points.
He plays safe and nudges in behind the yellow but there is a fair old bit of ground to cover in this frame.
Ding 7-5 Surety
Zak Surety clears 136 - his second century break of the day - to close within two again of Ding Junhui.
Surety has now hit three tons in the last four frames, and this is turning into a real battle on table two.
O'Sullivan 1-1 Carter
Stephen Hendry
Seven-time world champion on BBC Two
I don't know whether Ali Carter has missed an opportunity already in this session, to keep Ronnie feeling a little edgy, by winning that second frame.

Has Ronnie O'Sullivan had to qualify for the #worldsnooker at Sheffield, or does he go straight in as a previous champ?
Pete S in Solihull
Pete - The world's top 16 automatically qualify for the tournament. So although Ronnie has been out for three months, he is still ranked fifth in the world and did not need to qualify.
