Plymouth Devils get first away win in nearly two years

Plymouth Devils ended a run of 722 days without an away win with a shock 49-40 victory over Rye House in the Premier League Cup.

Guest Ricky Wells top-scored for Plymouth with 13 points supported well by Mark Lemon (12+2).

Heat wins in three of the last four races proved decisive for Plymouth.

It meant an excellent end to a disappointing weekend for the Devils following back-to-back defeats at the hands of Leicester Lions.

The Devils trailed by six points after three heats but fought back strongly to level things after race 10.

Wells won the pivotal heats 13 and 15 to ensure Plymouth bowed out of the League Cup at the group stage with an unlikely away win.

Two days earlier the Devils had suffered their heaviest home defeat of the season when going down 52-38 to Leicester.

Josh Grajczonek (9+1) top-scored for Plymouth but they could not match a powerful Lions top end.

Devils produced just five heat winners on the night and the concession of three 5-1 maximum heat losses in the last four heats was decisive.

In the reverse fixture Plymouth left Leicester frustrated after throwing away a two-point lead with just two races to go losing 46-44.

Craig Cook was in inspired form scoring a 15-point maximum for the Devils who won 11 of the 15 heats.

Leicester's Kevin Doolan and Alex Edberg produced a vital 5-1 in the penultimate race which proved the difference between the two sides.

Despite just missing out on the win Plymouth picked up an away bonus point which lifts them off the bottom of the Premier League table.
