Six Scots make British squad for swimming's World Championships

Hannah Miley believes securing a medal at the 2015 World Championships would be an "added bonus" as she targets success at the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

Miley is one of six Scots in the 30-strong Great Britain squad competing at Kazan, Russia, in August.

Ross Murdoch, Dan Wallace, Robbie Renwick, Duncan Scott and Stephen Milne are also included - but Olympic silver medallist Michael Jamieson misses out.

"I would love to come away with a medal," Miley told BBC Scotland.

"It's basically the final prep meet before the Olympics. It's the one opportunity you get to actually race against the competitors you'll probably be racing against at the Olympic Games.

"So if you can get on the podium it shows on a world level that you can be up there and be ranked in the top three."

Olympic silver medallist Michael Jamieson did not make the World Championship team

England's Adam Peaty - who set a 100m breaststroke world record at the British Championships in April - also makes Great Britain's World Championship squad, as does Wales' Jazz Carlin, who won gold in the 800m freestyle at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Miley, 25, took gold in the 400m individual medley in Glasgow and again at the British Championships in London, but does not think success at the 2016 Olympics hinges completely on shining at the World Championships.

"If you don't get a medal, sometimes it's no bad thing," said Miley, from Inverurie.

"In 2011, even though I was up on the podium, the girl who won the 400m medley in London actually didn't make the podium at the worlds.

"So just because you make the podium at the World Championships doesn't guarantee you'll be on the podium in Rio.

"Rio is the target for me, I really want to get on that podium. If I can come away from Russia with a medal it's an added bonus; if not it allows me to step up my game for the next year."

Miley is encouraged by the strength in depth of Scottish swimming ahead of the World Championships.

Commonwealth gold medallist Murdoch set a new Scottish record when winning a silver medal behind Peaty in the 100m breaststroke at the British Championships, while Stephen Milne won the 1500m freestyle.

"It's really strong at the moment and it's great to see," Miley added.

"We are a contender and it's not just going to be fully dominated by the English. It's nice that the Scots can produce top- and world-class athletes.

"We've got the facilities, we've got great coaches about and it's a really good course for Scottish swimming to step up in and make a mark on."
