European Championships 2018: Georgia Davies & men's 4x200m freestyle team win golds

Georgia Davies led a golden day in the pool for Great Britain at the European Championships as she won the 50m backstroke title before the men took the 4x200m freestyle relay crown.

Davies, 27, won her race in 27.23 seconds, ahead of second-placed Anastasia Fesikova, in 27.31.

James Guy then produced a brilliant final leg to hold off Russia and win relay gold for Britain in Glasgow.

Duncan Scott, who swam the second leg, also won 100m freestyle silver.

Davies proved she was in peak condition at these championships when she set a new European record of 27.21 in her heat on Saturday.

The Commonwealth bronze medallist was fractions outside that new mark in winning the title on Sunday, and said: "I tried my best to stay relaxed and just focus on myself the final.

"Just to get the win, that's all I care about - ultimately it's about the medals more than the times and I'm so so happy.

"I think 27 is the new 18 really."

Later on Sunday, Great Britain added the European 4x200m freestyle title to the world title they won last year.

Bury-born Guy, who sacrificed his spot in Sunday's 200m butterfly final, was part of that winning quartet in Budapest, as was Scott.

The 21-year-old Scottish swimmer, who lost to Italy's Alessandro Miressi in the 100m freestyle final, said: "We've shown good quality over the last couple of years in this event.

"We all focused towards this relay, this is one of the main relays for Britain."

Guy added: "It was definitely worth missing the 200m butterfly final for this."

The team was led out by Calum Jarvis, with Thomas Dean on the third leg.

There was disappointment for Briton Siobhan Marie O'Connor, who won her 100m breaststroke semi-final, but finished fifth in the final, won by Russia's Yuliya Efimova.

Wales' Alys Thomas will be hoping to add a European 200m butterfly title on Monday to her Commonwealth crown after winning her semi-final.

Monday's 200m breaststroke final promises to be a race of high quality with British reigning European champion Ross Murdoch, team-mate and Commonwealth champion James Wilby and world champion Anton Chupkov, who posted the fastest time of the two semi-finals, all involved.
