Britain's Andy Murray will play Robin Haase of the Netherlands in the US Open first round and could meet world number one Novak Djokovic in the last eight.

The Scot, 27, who won in 2012, has been seeded eighth for the tournament, which starts at Flushing Meadows on Monday.

Haase, 27, is 70th in the world rankings and lost to Murray in five sets in the 2011 US Open second round.

British women's number one Heather Watson meets Romanian Sorana Cirstea in the first round.

Watson, 22, is ranked 45 in the world and could play Wimbledon finalist Eugenie Bouchard in round two.

Compatriot Johanna Konta, who qualified for the main draw on ranking for the first time, plays Israel's Shahar Peer.

Murray has not won an ATP ranking event since Wimbledon in 2013.

The Scot is in the same quarter of the draw as Serb Djokovic and could meet his Toronto conqueror Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the fourth round.

The standout match of the women's opening round pits top seed and two-time defending champion Serena Williams against exciting American teenager Taylor Townsend.
