The defensive skills of Alcaraz are sending lots of balls down the centre of the court to take the angle options away from Sinner.

Sinner needs to reset and compose.

Alcaraz goes for power with the forehand on the first break point but overcooks it.

Sinner does the same on the next point and that hands over the double break.

  3. Alcaraz double break pointspublished at 21:27 British Summer Time 7 September

    *Sinner 2-6 6-3 0-3 Alcaraz

All of a sudden this set is running away from Sinner and Alcaraz moves to 0-30 on the Italian's serve before a crunching forehand paints the line and brings up three break points.

The way that Alcaraz has been able to increase his level in the third set is impressive. Sinner was getting the better of him in the second set.

I have never seen so much frustration from Sinner before.

Sinner moves to 0-30 then berates himself as Alcaraz wins the next three points.

He failed to capitalise on the Spaniard's second serve and a little bash of the racquet lets the crowd know what he thinks of that.

Ridiculous, smart play from Alcaraz follows as he seals the hold and cups his ear to encourage more noise from the Arthur Ashe crowd.

    Scintillating stuff.

  6. 'A stubbornness about Alcaraz'published at 21:20 British Summer Time 7 September

    Sinner 2-6 6-3 0-2 Alcaraz*

    Annabel Croft
Former British number one on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra and BBC Sounds

There are so many twists and turns in a game like this, it is hard for a player to sustain such a high level for this long period of time.

In the first set Alcaraz was rushing Sinner and coming forward with shock tactics. He is using that again here.

There is a stubbornness about Alcaraz at the moment.

  7. Alcaraz breakspublished at 21:20 British Summer Time 7 September

    Sinner 2-6 6-3 0-2 Alcaraz*

What?! I thought that was in and from the look on his face Sinner can't believe it either.

It's a powerful first serve down the T from the Italian but Alcaraz returns remarkably and the top seed's forehand drops millimetres wide.

An early break for the Spaniard.

  8. Alcaraz break pointpublished at 21:18 British Summer Time 7 September

    *Sinner 2-6 6-3 0-1 Alcaraz

Sinner produces a brave second serve to move to 30-30 after Alcaraz had got off to a fast start on the Italian's serve.

The defending champion goes wide with his cross-court forehand and Alcaraz has an early break point.

So, Carlos Alcaraz isn't going to win the US Open men's title this year without dropping a set.

Did anyone predict before this final that he would?

Nobody has achieved that since Aussie great Neale Fraser way back in 1960.

  10. 'The start of this set is key'published at 21:15 British Summer Time 7 September

In the second set, Alcaraz wasn't getting the free points on his first serve and therefore was not able to build the points behind the first serve. He will try to bring that level early into this third set.

The Spaniard never misses an opportunity to bring another level - the start of this set is so key.

  11. Alcaraz holdspublished at 21:15 British Summer Time 7 September

    *Sinner 2-6 6-3 0-1 Alcaraz

Alcaraz takes the hold with a floaty forehand which wrongfoots Sinner.

Who can call this one at the moment?

  12. Postpublished at 21:14 British Summer Time 7 September

    Sinner 2-6 6-3 0-0 Alcaraz*

A big "vamos!" from Alcaraz as he moves to game point after Sinner had got to 30-30.

Every point is just so important right now.

  13. Postpublished at 21:11 British Summer Time 7 September

People, we have a match on our hands.

Could we get another epic to rival the French Open?

  14. 'Sinner had to work hard for that'published at 21:10 British Summer Time 7 September

    Sinner 2-6 6-3 Alcaraz

    Annabel Croft
Former British number one on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra and BBC Sounds

Alcaraz is resorting to creativity again to get the errors.

Sinner is having to cope with a lot of different balls, heights and speeds. Everything is being thrown at him.

He had to work hard to get that game but gets the set.

  15. Game and second set - Sinnerpublished at 21:09 British Summer Time 7 September

    Sinner 2-6 6-3 Alcaraz

Arthur Ashe erupts as we may have just seen the point of the match for Sinner to lead 30-15. After a long rally, Alcaraz attempts the drop shot but Sinner arrives to return, the Spaniard sends back a looping effort but it is volleyed back for a winner.

Sinner gets the hold to 15 and is on the board.

This is bubbling up very nicely!

  16. 'Alcaraz is looking worried'published at 21:09 British Summer Time 7 September

    *Sinner 2-6 5-3 Alcaraz

    Annabel Croft
Former British number one on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra and BBC Sounds

The demeanour of Alcaraz has completely shifted. He came out with a joyful, carefree will of ball blasting. His expression is looking a lot more worried now.

Sinner is hurling himself at the ball, he gets both feet off the floor with the effort he puts in.

  17. Alcaraz holdspublished at 21:05 British Summer Time 7 September

    *Sinner 2-6 5-3 Alcaraz

Alcaraz will serve to stay in the set then.

He's not ready to give it up that easily and looks focused as he walks to the back of the court at 40-15.

Sinner claws back to 40-30 but Alcaraz comes up with a big serve to hold.

    Over to Sinner...

  18. 'Sinner targeting Alcaraz backhand'published at 21:03 British Summer Time 7 September

    Sinner 2-6 5-2 Alcaraz*

After being beaten by Alcaraz's forehand, Sinner is having to hit more of his own forehands down the line to Alcaraz's backhand. He is directing a lot more traffic to the backhand in this set.

Sinner is throwing his celebrations straight down the line to Alcaraz, not his camp. You can sense that Alcaraz is hungry for the break back.

  19. Sinner holdspublished at 21:01 British Summer Time 7 September

    Sinner 2-6 5-2 Alcaraz*

It feels like Alcaraz's blip might already be over - they are trading forehands and points now to 30-30.

Sinner takes game point when Alcaraz can only return into the net.

The Italian will hope he's already done enough in this set with that earlier break to get over the line because his Spanish rival is coming back into it.

  20. 'Alcaraz will want to get the break back'published at 20:59 British Summer Time 7 September

    *Sinner 2-6 4-2 Alcaraz

    Annabel Croft
Former British number one on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra and BBC Sounds

Alcaraz is going to do everything in his power to get the break back. He has not given up this second set yet.

If he can get some good connections on returns of serve, anything can happen. He is bringing everything all the time and keeping Sinner guessing.
