This is Heather Watson's 47th match for Great Britain in this women's team competition since her debut in 2011.
She has a 31-15 win-loss record and has won eight of her 11 doubles contests.
All of Olivia Nicholls' four previous matches have been in doubles, with three of them victories.
The winners of today's semi-final will face Italy, last year's runner-up, in the final on Wednesday (16:00 GMT) after their win over Poland in the last four.
After Italy's Lucia Bronzetti had defeated Magda Linette in straight sets, world number two Iga Swiatek drew Poland back level with a straight-set win over French Open and Wimbledon finalist Jasmine Paolini.
But Paolini and Sara Errani, who won Olympic doubles gold together in Paris earlier this year, got the better of Swiatek and Katarzyna Kawa to book their spot in the final.

Slovakia have hung so tough, they said they had nothing to lose and that's exactly how they're playing - and they've managed to draw it back to such an exciting doubles match now.
As mentioned earlier, Great Britain hadn't lost a set - let alone a match - on their way to the semi-finals.
Britain's hopes of a first final in this event since 1981 lie with Heather Watson and Olivia Nicholls.

Absolute joy for Team Slovakia. What a performance from Sramkova, she found her way back into the match and what a way to finish. It's never easy to lead the team but she's been brilliant at it.
Disappointment for Katie Boulter, she had this match, she was so confident and dictating the match, and it kind of slipped away from her hands.
