Summary

  1. Lys breakspublished at 20:48 British Summer Time

    Jones 0-2 Lys*

Eva Lys has come out fighting here.

The German puts pressure on the Fran Jones serve with a great backhand and then it's an error from Jones that allows a break point.

Lys is able to convert it with another backhand and gains an early advantage.

  2. Harris holdspublished at 20:47 British Summer Time

    Harris 4-4 Auger-Aliassime*

Felix Auger-Aliassime seemed to be cruising along at 3-0 but we've reached a bit of a stalemate as Billy Harris holds to love and we remain firmly locked on serve in this opening set.

He's keeping pace with the 25th seed so far.

Billy Harris has got to find that balance of being aggressive without overhitting. It's really early stages for Billy in his career to be playing at this level and he feels like he might have to overplay at times.

He's just got to really try and get a few games under his belt, feel a bit more comfortable and you never know where his game might take him.

He stagnated a bit at the start of the year. He changed racquets and I didn't think it worked out well for him, but he's gone back to his original racquet in the last few months and he's found a bit of form again.

  4. Auger-Aliassime holdspublished at 20:44 British Summer Time

    *Harris 3-4 Auger-Aliassime

Some much better serving from Felix Auger-Aliassime to take a very convincing hold to love and nudge back ahead in this first set.

  5. Jones will have 'excitement and nerves'published at 20:43 British Summer Time

    *Jones 0-1 Lys

    Ken Skupski
Former British player on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra and BBC Sounds

There will be excitement and nerves for Francesca Jones, so it's just about how they settle. I know she is returning serve at the minute, but if she can get that first service game under her belt then it will be a great feeling.

This opportunity to get her first win is a good one, especially as she isn't playing a top seed. It is a good draw without being a great draw.

  6. Harris holdspublished at 20:42 British Summer Time

    Harris 3-3 Auger-Aliassime*

Nicely done by Billy Harris to take the hold after breaking back.

He's keeping that scoreboard pressure up.

  7. Lys holdspublished at 20:42 British Summer Time

    *Jones 0-1 Lys

A strong start from both players here but Eva Lys gets the job done.

Some great striking on the forehand from Jones helped her force deuce but the German manages to hold serve with an ace.

  8. Harris breaks backpublished at 20:38 British Summer Time

    *Harris 2-3 Auger-Aliassime

    Yes, he can!

A double fault from Felix Auger-Aliassime hands the lucky loser the break back. A huge boost.

The players are ready to go out on court six.

It will be Eva Lys to serve first.

  10. Harris break pointspublished at 20:37 British Summer Time

    Harris 1-3 Auger-Aliassime*

Billy Harris takes advantage of that poor serving and earns himself a couple of break points.

He had three on Felix Auger-Aliassime's previous service game, can he take his chance this time?

  11. Postpublished at 20:36 British Summer Time

    Harris 1-3 Auger-Aliassime*

Felix Auger-Aliassime's first serve is surprisingly low down at 44%.

A double fault hands Billy Harris a 0-30 lead on the Canadian's serve.

  12. Harris holdspublished at 20:35 British Summer Time

    Harris 1-3 Auger-Aliassime*

Billy Harris gets himself on the board in the fourth game of set one.

He held his nerve well there to survive three deuces.

  13. Harris 'rhythm is slightly off'published at 20:33 British Summer Time

    *Harris 0-3 Auger-Aliassime

    Ken Skupski
Former British player on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra and BBC Sounds

Even though Billy Harris has had opportunities it looks like his rhythm is slightly off. Court 17 does sometimes play differently to some of the other other courts and I'm not sure why.

I don't know if it's the makeup of the court, in terms of the wind or how much it's used prior to the event but it doesn't look that comfortable when it comes to ball striking, which is something he's usually very good at.

  14. Postpublished at 20:33 British Summer Time

    *Harris 0-3 Auger-Aliassime

Billy Harris continues to struggle to get into this match as he's taken to deuce for a third time on serve.

Flushing Meadows has already provided a moment for the memory books for Great Britain's Francesca Jones, who has reached the US Open main draw for the first time in her career.

Jones, who has never won a main-draw Grand Slam match, cruised through three rounds of qualifying - without dropping a set - to set up her first-round encounter with Germany's Eva Lys on Court 6.

The 24-year-old revealed that her parents weren't able to attend the qualifiers "because a dog sitter wasn't available", but she did ring them just moments after beating Arianne Hartono 6-2 6-4 to celebrate.

After falling short of the cut-off date for automatic entry to this year's tournament, the British number four broke into the world's top 100 for the first time last month, moving up to 86th after winning back-to-back titles on the WTA 125 tour.

  16. Swiatek tackles today's big news storypublished at 20:31 British Summer Time

BBC Sport senior tennis reporter at Flushing Meadows

I know you're all desperate to hear Iga Swiatek's reaction to the big news of the day in the United States.

Nope, not US President Donald Trump's latest cabinet meeting.

And definitely not Swiatek's simple US Open first-round win.

But pop megastar Taylor Swift's engagement to NFL icon Travis Kelce.

"Well, I'm just happy for her, because she deserves the best," laughed Swiatek, who counts herself among the Swifties.

"Obviously she had a lot of boyfriends, so we know all about that. So hopefully this one will stick forever."

Sure the happy couple will, er, appreciate the sentiment.

After success for the Brits on day one and two it's been less than plain sailing for them today with Katie Boulter and Sonay Kartal both round-one casualties.

Can Billy Harris avoid joining them?

Fran Jones is also in action any minute now against German Eva Lys.

British number one Katie Boulter has been speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live following her first-round defeat: "I think there have been a lot of matches which have been quite tough for me. I feel like I've been repeating the same errors, which I personally want to change and feel like I need to do something different with. I think my serve was an issue today, but I still feel like it was a close match regardless. I had chances to get myself to 5-5 in the second set and also 4-4 in the first set, so the serve wasn't the only thing but it is a huge part of my game which needs addressing."

On saving five match points: "Tennis matches are all about momentum, you have your opportunities to get yourself back into it. So, even when I'm not playing my best tennis or hitting my best form, I definitely feel like I can compete with some of the best in the world. I'm sure I won't see the positives right now but I'm sure at one point I'll take heart in knowing my groundstrokes can still get me to the place that it did. I do feel like I need to start moving forward in different areas though."

On her comment about not taking time out after Wimbledon: "I think that week in Montreal was a really tough week for me but, after that point, I've really found where I want to be on the court and how I want to be positioning myself. I feel in a really good place mentally, so regardless of today's result I'm already seeing the positive outlooks. I'm excited at the prospect that I can keep improving. I'm excited to have that feeling of a will and an excitement to improve again."

  19. Auger-Aliassime holds from 0-40published at 20:26 British Summer Time

    *Harris 0-3 Auger-Aliassime

Impressive stuff from Felix Auger-Aliassime as he goes down 0-40 but rallies to take the hold and extend his lead in set one.

A couple of deuces in there as Billy Harris tried to hang on but the Canadian has made a good start in this match.

  20. Auger-Aliassime saves break pointspublished at 20:22 British Summer Time

    Harris 0-2 Auger-Aliassime*

Billy Harris berates himself as Felix Auger-Aliassime wipes out two of the three break points.

And there goes the third, too, as the Canadian's slice catches Harris off guard.
