A good battle at the net at 15-15 is won by Haddad Maia as she clips her return out of Navarro's reach before fist pumping the air as she leads 30-15.

The camera cuts to the crowd as we have a short break here and clocks a couple, one wearing what looks like a lampshade as a hat and the other wearing a cap saying "I was there".

Fascinated now to know where "there" was.

We remain on serve as a second ace of the match helps Haddad Maia to hold.

Navarro's best opportunities come when she can engage her opponent in rallies, but that's proving difficult when Haddad Maia's serving is as strong as it has been.

    Navarro 1-6 1-0 Haddad Maia*

This is much more even now as the pair fight to deuce in the second game of this second set.

Navarro slaps her side as she sends a return into the net and it is advantage Haddad Maia, and a swift break back is on the cards.

But Haddad Maia sweeps a shot wide and then sees a lob drop just the wrong side of the white line.

Now it is Navarro's chance to take the game but she double faults and we are back to deuce.

A proper battle now. How this one goes could be crucial to shaping the course of this match.

A devastatingly comfortable first set for Haddad Maia.

It is going to take some turnaround from the number three seed to stop Haddad Maia.
