That cheer and roar from Murray is the sound of many summers past.

And it is for games such as that, which are the reason Andy Murray will be so missed when he does retire.

It had a bit of everything and, at the end of it, it is the two-time Wimbledon champion who lets out a huge roar and punches the air as the crowd celebrate with him.

Murray takes charge of the deciding set.

Oh, Murray liked that shot - and so did the crowd!

Murray is still steaming over that decision by the umpire. It was a brave call as I thought Murray was in position. But sometimes that is all Murray needs - to be a rebel with a cause.

A great challenge from Alexei Popyrin ensures he gets his reward for catching the line with a winner when trailing 0-15 on serve.

The chair umpire rules the point goes to Popyrin, and Andy Murray asks a couple of times whether the umpire is happy with making that call. It appears he is. Tension.

But it's soon back to business for the Briton, who levels at 30-30. He then challenges a first serve, which it turns out was actually quite clearly out, and then makes the most of the second serve that follows to set up a break point.

Popyrin recovers for deuce, but Murray produces an absolutely stunning return that whips the crowd up before a second break point.

It's a very Andy Murray game, this.

I don't think Murray wants to get embroiled in long, drawn out rallies - he'll keep the points short.

  7. Murray holds serve at start of third setpublished at 18:02 18 June

    Murray 6-3 3-6 1-0 Popyrin*

Andy Murray gets things back under way for the third and final set on centre court at the Queen's Club.

A wonderful sliced drop shot delights the crowd as he makes a promising start, cruising to a 40-0 lead, but a backhand strays wide to keep Alexei Popyrin in contention at 40-30.

'Let's go' repeats Murray, as he holds to get himself up and running.

For the clued-up fans loitering around the outside courts yesterday, there was a real lunchtime treat.

In the shadow of Queen's centre court, Andy Murray and Carlos Alcaraz - both three-time major champions and world number ones - practised together.

Murray edged a practice set 5-3, according to a Spanish journalist who was scoring - with the help of Alcaraz's dad Carlos senior.

Encouraging signs for 37-year-old Murray that he can still mix it with the reigning Queen's and Wimbledon champion.

Of course, transferring that on to the match court is a different kettle of fish.

It was much looser and free-flowing from Popyrin. His first serve seemed to do so much more in that second set. I felt Andy was hindered in his movement.

Everything at the moment is going the way of Alexei Popyrin.

  11. Game and second set - Popyrinpublished at 17:57 18 June

    *Murray 6-3 3-6 0-0 Popyrin

It tends to be when Murray is landing, certainly in that previous game following a serve, that he grimaces slightly - but it's difficult to tell how serious an issue this is for him.

Alexei Popyrin quickly races to two set points, and takes the first with some rather efficient serving.

We will go to a decider!

Murray certainly doesn't look comfortable but he holds - and is holding on to a bit of hope in this second set.

Popyrin finds the line with a superb lob at the back of the court for break point but Murray, who is looking slightly uncomfortable at times, fights back.

A clever serve secures the hold to keep him alive - just about - in set two.

That's a couple of double faults in this game. Sometimes you can read too much into the body language, but Andy did not look comfortable after that serve.

Signs of frustration creeping in for Andy Murray as he drops a forehand into the net for 40-30, before a second double-fault in this game hands Popyrin an opportunity at deuce.

Andy Murray will now try and set up one final chance at breaking Alexei Popyrin in this second set. The Briton hasn't looked in too much trouble in any service game since being broken in his first but a double-fault immediately invites pressure at 15-15.

The crowd show their appreciation as Alexei Popyrin moves Andy Murray out of position before knocking in a volley as he continues to look rock solid in this set.

There remains no way back for Andy Murray right now as the Australian edges closer to forcing a third set.

I don't think I'll ever tire of watching an Andy Murray backhand. It looks like he has all the time in the world to hit that.

A groan from Murray as he bends a forehand beyond the baseline for 30-30. But an aggressive first serve helps him to game point and the crowd rally behind him as he gets the job done from there to stay in touch.
