I cannot believe how technically perfect Alcaraz's volleys are for someone that young. I just love watching him volley.

To be able to do it so early his career, when some of the top players never felt that comfortable up there.

A lot of information coming from the Djokovic team. He doesn't look too pleased to be hearing it to be honest.

I wonder what advice they have for that 128mph ace Alcaraz has just sent down?

Djokovic does his bit and holds to love. Alcaraz will once again serve to stay in the set.

I know we sometimes say that he is playing possum, but I do think Djokovic is looking weary out here. This set is really taking it out of him.

It's his walks in between points for me - the spring isn't quite in the legs like it is with Alcaraz.

Nerveless from Alcaraz as he holds serve to stay in the set.

Have to say, though, that after just over one and a half hours on Arthur Ashe Djokovic is looking a little tired.

He has fooled us like this before though.

Everyone in the 25,000 crowd held their breath as they waited to see how that 27-shot exchange ended.

Djokovic had to catch his afterwards.

But he recovered quickly enough to dig out what could be a huge hold in this fascinating match.

If Djokovic wins, he will become the oldest men's Grand Slam finalist since Ken Rosewall over half a century ago in 1974.

  10. Djokovic holds from 0-30published at 21:47 British Summer Time 5 September

    Djokovic 4-6 5-4 Alcaraz*

A rare show of frustration from Alcaraz as he kicks his towel box after just missing the forehand dropshot at the net. There's been a few of those.

Djokovic produces a big serve to hold from 0-30. Impressive stuff.

Djokovic has gone into the corner undeneath his team and started to do lunging stretches for his hamstrings.

That is not a good sign - I haven't seen him do it this early in a match before, it's not like we are into the fifth set.

Goodness me. A monster 27-shot rally with insane ball-striking from both players ends with a bit of luck for Djokovic as Alcaraz's forehand clips the net and drops back on his own side of the court.

A crucial point for 15-30 with Alcaraz starting to move ahead in the game.

At the start of the second set, you couldn't help but think back to Melbourne.

Alcaraz controls the first set, then gets scrambled by Djokovic upping the intensity.

This time, though, Alcaraz recognised what was happening. He has adjusted accordingly - tactically and mentally.

95 US Open wins for Novak Djokovic.

Jimmy Connors holds the men's record with 98.

He will need another US Open to try and overtake the Connors record, and this is what motivates him.

That was a poor game from Djokovic. Right from the go, the nerves were jangling a little bit even if he is ahead on the score.

He kept coming forward and it felt like some of those moves forward were 'bluffs'. They haven't been convincing and Alcaraz is more than matching it. He will be releived that he is back on track.
