In the women's draw, there was success for Britain's Katie Boulter and Emma Raducanu.

Elena Rybakina needed just 53 minutes to reach the Australian Open second round, while Ons Jabeur, Jasmine Paolini and Madison Keys also claimed straightforward wins.

American eighth seed Emma Navarro, winner of the WTA's Most Improved Player of the Year Award last year, had to come from a set down to beat compatriot Peyton Stearns.

Here's a look at what else has been going on in the men's draw today.

Russian fifth seed Daniil Medvedev destroyed a net camera as hebattled to control his emotions in a five-set thriller against world number 418 Kasidit Samrej.

There were also five-set wins for Gael Monfils and Holger Rune, while Taylor Fritz, Ben Shelton and Hubert Hurkacz all saw out straight-set victories.

There was disappointment, however, for British number two Cameron Norrie, who fell to Matteo Berrettini after winning the first set.

  4. Breakthrough month for Fonsecapublished at 12:21 Greenwich Mean Time

This last month has been pretty special for Joao Fonseca.

Just over three weeks ago, the 18-year-old Brazilian became the second-youngest winner of the Next Gen ATP Finals title.

Only Jannik Sinner, who won the Australian Open last year, has lifted the title at a younger age.

And now Fonseca has won his very first Grand Slam match - against world number nine Andrey Rublev no less!

I'm sitting here with a big smile on my face and goosebumps because we are watching the birth of another superstar, right before our eyes.

At match point, Joao Fonseca got the opportunity, he didn't blink and he smashes the forehand for the winner down the line. He milks it, he takes it on, he loves it.

He is born for this stage - welcome to the world of tennis Joao Fonseca.

A remarkable result on Margaret Court Arena.

Men's ninth seed Andrey Rublev is OUT!

And he has fallen to Brazil's 18-year-old qualifier Joao Fonseca, making his Grand Slam debut. Remember the name.

It's a day he will not forget in a hurry, that's for sure, as he wraps up a stunning straight-set victory over the 10-time major quarter-finalist.

A frustrated Rublev took out his frustration on his racquet as Fonseca fought back from a break down at 3-1 in the third set to force a tie-break.

And the talented Brazilian condemns Rublev to his first Australian Open first round exit in six years with his first match point to huge cheers in Melbourne.

  7. 'Australia is the closest I have ever felt to home'published at 12:12 Greenwich Mean Time

    Boulter 6-4 3-6 7-5 Marino

More from Katie Boulter on whether Australia feels like a home away from home: "It's funny you ask that - this is the closest I have ever felt to home. So it's all because of you guys. From the moment I landed here in Australia, even in Sydney, I have felt the love and I can't tell you how much it means to me. Thank you so much."

On whether she is happy with where she is at coming into the season: "Yeah. I mean I am always striving for more. I feel like I had a really good year last year, on paper it was my career-high ranking best year. I really feel like I can improve my game so much more and every match that I play I have so much to keep improving.

"Hopefully you are going to keep seeing more and more of me this year and I'll be higher up the rankings."

On Alex de Minaur playing at the same time as herself: "I'm guessing he won? I kind of figured that if he lost he wouldn't be sat there. I'm so happy to see him through."

  8. 'That was way too stressful'published at 12:09 Greenwich Mean Time

    Boulter 6-4 3-6 7-5 Marino

British number one Katie Boulter has been speaking courtside after sealing her first round win: "That was way too stressful for me. I would have way preferred an easier match but I mean Marino came out firing today. It is literally because of you guys that I got through this match, so I really appreciate it."

On having to come from behind a number of times: "That was massively a mental challenge for me. I have been playing great tennis on the practice court and I tried so hard to put that on the match court. Sometimes, when you really try to force it, it doesn't work and I found that out tonight. She was playing great and I know how tough she can be, I'm just thankful I found a way and sometimes that is what these first round matches are about."

A big couple of days for the Brits in Melbourne.

This is the first time in the Open era that six British players have won first round singles matches at the Australian Open.

Katie Boulter joins Jack Draper, Jacob Fearnley, Emma Raducanu, Harriet Dart and Jodie Burrage in the second round.

That is a win for the De Minaurs!

He turned up and I asked the question about whether that was going to make the difference - you would have to say yes now. The intensity changed.

All of a sudden we heard her exhaling and that's what you do when you are playing in the moment with intensity. That was the best return game she had played in the whole match and she got in behind every single ball.

That's what the best tennis players do, they turn up in the moment.

"I'm guessing he won," Katie Boulter says when she's asked about Alex de Minaur, who she got engaged to last month.

He did indeed, Katie. The Australian eighth seed claimed a straight-set win over Botic van de Zandschulp.

This is job done by Boulter there for me. She is building pressure and we said that this was the business-end of things.

We asked what the world 98 is going to do and she has missed three first serves here and then come out with a world-class backhand at 15-15, but the pressure is starting to build.

  16. Match point Boulterpublished at 11:53 Greenwich Mean Time

Katie Boulter can't make the most of that one, but she's got herself another with a brilliant forehand winner down the line.

A huge, huge yell of delight from Katie Boulter as Rebecca Marino pushes into the net.

    Match point number one.

That is simply superb from Rebecca Marino, who has to crouch to absorb Katie Boulter's return but she manages to pinch the line with a winner.

The Briton knows this is her chance, though, and she forces Marino into another error. 30-30.

  19. Postpublished at 11:50 Greenwich Mean Time

Now would be the perfect time for Katie Boulter to challenge Rebecca Marino's serve.

After failing to take advantage of Marino's second serve on the first point, Boulter slams home a forehand winner down the line. 15-15.
