De La Puente 2-6 3-6 Hewett

Alfie Hewett continues, thanking his coaching team and family after winning the Wimbledon singles titles to complete his Grand Slam collection:

"I don’t want to look over here because I'll probably start crying. I want to thank my team, they're like a second family over there, we've gone through a lot together, a lot of highs and some lows.

"But no matter how many times you get knocked down you can still get back up and keep trying, and that’s all down to you guys."

"And to my quiet bunch over there, you're an incredible lot. It's obviously not been an easy couple of years.

"I want to thank my grandad who's here today. Some say we go way back, he was here for my very first Wimbledon performance and it's really nice you can he here today to celebrate this win.

"And to the rest of my family, you're all very special and I love you lots."

  6. 'Last night I was a ball of nerves'published at 12:47 British Summer Time 14 July 2024

De la Puente 2-6 3-6 Hewett

Alfie Hewett on what it means to win the Wimbledon singles title following final defeats in 2022 and 2023:

“You don’t need to remind me [how tough previous defeats have been].

"I mean, I'm speechless, to be honest. These last few years have been difficult, losing twice.

"Winning the doubles with Gordon [Reid] is good memories, but to leave on a singles final loss has been heart-breaking the last couple of years. But I've really seen the positives in my development and game on grass.

"Narrowly missing out has been tough before and last night I was a ball of nerves, I'll be honest. But I'm really proud of my performance out there.

"I want to congratulate Martin. We've been playing since we were 10 years old. I just said at the net it's incredible how far we've come as competitors. I want to say you should be very proud of your week, I'm sure this won't be your last Grand Slam final."

It would be huge if Alfie Hewett could consolidate his break of serve here.

*De la Puente 2-6 3-3 Hewett

Possibly the rally of the match so far and it's Alfie Hewett who comes out on top as he moves in to guide a forehand winner past Martin de la Puente - he needed that at 0-30 down.

De la Puente is not discouraged, however, as a forehand return winner earns the Spaniard a break point, and it's taken as Hewett double faults.

Hard to predict which way this second set will go at the moment.
