BBC Cymru Wales' Sports Unsung Hero 2013

The BBC Sports Unsung Hero Award celebrates people working behind the scenes to make sport accessible to all.

Do you know someone who inspires people to get involved in playing sport in their communities?

It could be a person, who for no personal reward, gives up their time to encourage others to take part in sport.

It might be someone who could be helping to unearth a champion of the future or who is just keeping a local team or club going behind the scenes.

The BBC's Unsung Hero awards have run annually since 2003. They recognise special people who dedicate their lives to promoting sport in their community, taking no reward from it other than the pleasure of helping others to participate and enjoy their sport.

The Wales Unsung Hero winner will be chosen by an expert panel and announced in November.

He or she will then compete against the winners from all 12 BBC English Regions plus Scotland and Northern Ireland for the overall winner who will be announced on the BBC's Sports Personality of the Year programme in December, live on BBC ONE.

Following nominations from members of the public which ran from 29 August to 16 October, panels will meet in each of the BBC's 15 Nations and English Regions and a winner from each will be chosen.

The overall winner will come from those 15 and will be announced on the night of the BBC Sports Personality of the Year programme, which this year will be held in Leeds on Sunday, 15 December.

Arthur Wood, a long-term volunteer at Swansea Rifle Club, won the 2012 BBC Wales Unsung Hero award.

Arthur became a wheelchair user after an industrial accident at Briton Ferry steelworks in 1969 left him a full leg amputee and also with fingers of his right hand missing. He has been a stalwart at the club for more than 20 years, devoting many thousands of hours to helping all who attend.

2011 winner Gareth Wyn Hughes was recognised for developing Rhondda Golf Academy into a thriving community, offering golf opportunities to boys and girls up to the age of 18 and encouraging a number of primary and secondary schools participate in coaching sessions on a weekly basis.
