Triathlete Helen Jenkins will win a medal for Wales at the Commonwealth Games despite having an injury scare, says world champion Non Stanford.

Two-time world champion Jenkins, 30, pulled out of the latest leg of the ITU World Series, external in Hamburg on Sunday during the run.

Stanford, who will miss Glasgow 2014 through injury, said Jenkins told her it was just a niggle in her ankle.

"I'm still confident that Helen will be on that podium," said Stanford.

"Initially we were all a bit worried, but having spoken to her after the race she's absolutely fine. She's happy.

"It was definitely a precautionary measure. She had a bit of a niggle in her ankle and I think someone caught it on the run so she just said 'enough is enough for today and I'll just concentrate on the Commonwealth Games'."

Jenkins, who was born in Elgin, Scotland,, external will be the main focus for Welsh medal hopes on 23 July - the opening day in Glasgow - following Stanford's withdrawal.

The Bridgend-based athlete won the World title in 2008 and 2011, but missed out on a medal at the London 2012 Olympics, finishing fifth.

She had been one of the favourites to take Olympic gold, but a knee injury had limited her training in the lead up to the race in Hyde Park.

Jenkins also suffered a back problem that required surgery and missed the 2013 series, which Stanford won.

Fellow Brit Jodie Stimpson has moved up to second in the ITU standings,, external one place above Jenkins, after the Welsh athlete pulled out of the race in Germany.

Despite the setback, Stanford is confident Jenkins will deliver for Wales in Glasgow.

"I'm still really confident in Helen's ability," said Stanford.

"She's a performer. She always pulls it out of the bag on the day.

"She did fantastic at the Olympics when you consider how much training she did and she's been so solid all year."
