Track World Championships: Doull out to banish 2014 failure

Owain Doull wants to make amends following Britain's men's failure at last year's World Track Championships.

Doull was a member of the team which failed to win a medal for the first time since 1998.

The 21-year-old is once again included in the pursuit squad for this year's championships in Paris and is looking to banish the memories of 12 months ago.

"It was probably the worst week of my life if I'm honest," he said.

"We tried a lot of different things going into the event and it just didn't pay off ultimately. We tried our best on the day, but we learnt a lot.

"You kind of forget with GB it's almost like you're expected to get a medal. It just shows everyone's normal and you can have off days."

British Cycling head coach Shane Sutton claimed the men's pursuit team, which included Doull, lacked commitment in the lead up to last year's event in Colombia.

Doull along with fellow Welshman Sam Harrison as well as Ed Clancy and Jon Dibben finished eighth, with Sutton claiming they had "let themselves down."

But the team were crowned team pursuit champions in the UCI Track World Cup series after taking bronze in the final round in Cali, Colombia in January.

Cardiff-born Doull was part of the pursuit team which won in the London round in December, where they finished strongly to beat New Zealand.

"Compared to where we were this time last year we're in a lot better spot," Doull added.

"We had a strong winter again. Everyone's in a pretty good place and looking forward to getting out to Paris and see what we can do.

Doull and Mark Christian won gold in the men's madison at the UCI Track World Cup in London in December and the Welshman will compete in the event in Paris.

"I think it's the best race you can have on two wheels if I'm honest," said Doull.

"To win in London was nice and I'm looking forward to it, but it's the team pursuit first and foremost."
