Jack Oliver sets 77kg record to claim British Championship

English weightlifter Jack Oliver set a British record to win the 77kg category at the British Championships at Coventry's Ricoh Arena.

The 23-year-old lifted 172kg in the clean and jerk to beat the division's previous best by a single kilogram.

Oliver also easily met the Commonwealth Games qualifying standard of 280kg with a total of 312kg.

European bronze medallist Zoe Smith lifted 200kg to beat England team-mate Sarah Davies in the 63kg category.

Smith, who normally competes at 58kg, told BBC Sport: "I'm chuffed. I've had a few niggles but I'm in a good place going forward to the Commonwealths.

"After the European Championships I felt a bit run down. So with my coach, I decided it would be better to be put weight back on and be in a good place for training for Glasgow.

"I'm still absolutely committed to the getting the Commonwealth gold medal."

The British Championships was the last chance for Oliver to post the Commonwealth qualifying mark of 140kg.

He said: "During the snatch it was a relief because it hadn't been going well in training.

"I knew I had to get the Commonwealth standard and also a top-two place.

"I kind of wasn't expecting it myself, as I've lost weight and dropped a division, so I couldn't be happier."
