The number of inmates being transferred from Jersey's prison to the UK has "significantly reduced", a report has revealed.

The Government of Jersey confirmed HMP La Moye deports one prisoner on average to the UK each month, either because they are originally from the UK, or because they have to serve a particularly long sentence.

It said this year only two prisoners had been transferred and 13 were waiting to be deported.

The prison report said the reduced number was due to UK prisons having "capacity challenges".

"HMP La Moye continues to be the only prison in Jersey; it is a small but complex prison serving the island’s Magistrates and Royal Court, holding male, female, remand, and sentenced prisoners of all security categories (and juveniles on a case-by-case basis) and dealing with repatriation and deportation cases," the prison's annual report said.

"These have been significantly reduced over the reporting period due to capacity challenges in UK prisons."

The government said HMP Le Moye had capacity for up to 200 prisoners but housed an average of 140.
