Two electric vehicle (EV) charging points have been installed on a busy Jersey road.

Jersey Electricity (JE) has set up two 7kW charge points on The Parade in St Helier.

The points are the first "neighbourhood charging facilities" on the island and can be used by electric vehicle owners who do not have their own home charger.

They are also the first communal charging points not to be located in car parks on the island, JE said.

Both charging points, initially installed for the Evie Car Club, have joined the island's Evolve network and takes the total number of charging points to 111 across 36 locations.

JE worked alongside the island's infrastructure and environment department and the parish of St Helier to launch the facilities.

Peter Cadiou, JE’s director of commercial services, said the new charging points marked an "exciting and significant step" for Jersey and building towards a zero-carbon future.

'Saw the challenges'

Mr Cadiou added: "We saw the challenges facing electric vehicle drivers without off-street parking.

"By bringing charging facilities into high density areas we are directly supporting these electric vehicle drivers, giving them charging options closer to their homes.

"This is the first neighbourhood charging facility and we aim to introduce more, in partnership with the parish of St Helier and others, to provide electric vehicle drivers with greater choice of where to charge their vehicles."

St Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft said environmental issues had been at the forefront of the parish's agenda.

"I am also hopeful that this will go some way to support residents who want to do their bit for the environment with an electric vehicle, but for whatever reason are unable to do so by charging at their own home," he said.
