Work has begun to install new speed limit signs on 27 roads around Birmingham.

A speed reduction from 40 to 30mph on the routes was fast-tracked by the city council after it declared a road safety emergency last year.

Councillor Majid Mahmood, cabinet member for environment and transport, said: "Working with our police partners, swift and decisive action will be taken against those who break the rules of the road."

Campaign group Better Streets for Birmingham said at least 23 people had died on roads in the city between June 2023 and July 2024.

The city council consulted on an initial review of 40mph limits in 2023.

According to the authority, 1,674 people responded, with most - 949 (56.7%) - opposed to the switch. A total of 635 (37.9%) were in favour, with 90 expressing a neutral view.

But the council is going ahead with the move, having said the concerns of a quarter of the opponents centred on enforcement matters.

Mahmood said: "We are also working with police on red light cameras and we have just announced six new locations for average speed cameras."

The council has not revealed the project's cost but said the scheme would be funded by surplus income from the city's Clean Air Zone (CAZ) charges - sums ring-fenced for transport projects.

The council added the speed limit changes would only apply to the sections of road that were within the city's borders.

The changes are set to come into effect later this year.
