A woman has suffered serious injuries after being attacked by her two XL bullies in a flat in Edinburgh.

The 26-year-old was taken to hospital following the incident in Leith on Thursday.

The dogs have since been euthanised and police have launched an investigation into the incident.

It comes months after ownership of the breed was subjected to strict new controls in Scotland, in line with England and Wales, following a series of attacks across the UK.

Officers were called to the scene at Academy Street on 16 May after reports of a person being attacked by dogs within a flat.

The woman was later taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh for treatment.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said inquiries were ongoing.

Owners of the breed now risk a fine for failing to muzzle the animals and keep them on a lead in public under rules which took effect in Scotland in February.

The abandonment, breeding, exchanging or selling of the dogs has also been banned, with penalties of up to £5,000 imposed for a breach.

The legislation was introduced following concerns over an influx of XL bullies to Scotland since the UK government brought in controls on the dogs south of the border last year.

The new rules came into effect just days after police shot a "dangerously out of control dog" in East Kilbride when it injured three people.

In March, the animals were also linked to attacks on two children in East Ayrshire and on a Chihuahua and its owner in Glasgow.
