The main road linking Douglas and the north of the Isle of Man will be closed for five evenings due to maintenance work, the infrastructure department has said.

The A18 Mountain Road will shut between Ramsey Hairpin and the Creg Ny Baa between 18:30 and 22:00 BST from 5 to 9 August.

The Department of Infrastructure said the closures were necessary to “facilitate seasonal verge cutting along the length of the route”.

Damage to a bridge wall on the Mountain Mile - caused by a recent crash - will also be repaired during the closure.

A spokesman for the department said provisional closures were also in place for the following week in case “some or all of the primary dates cannot be used” due to bad weather, including reduced visibility that would make operating cutting machinery “too risky”.

If the conditions did prevent the work being carried out on any of the scheduled evenings, the road would reopen early on that day, he added.

Access to the Snaefel Mountain Railway stop at the Bungalow and the Victory Cafe will be possible via Tholt Y Will, with access to the Creg Ny Baa available from Douglas or the Creg Ny Baa Back Road.
