One of the largest shopping centres in the UK is celebrating its 25th anniversary.

Bluewater, at Greenhithe, Kent, opened its doors for the first time on 16 March 1999.

Built in a giant chalk quarry, it employs 7,000 people. A total of 93 staff have been working there since it opened.

A spokesperson for Bluewater described the anniversary as a "landmark day".

James Waugh, centre director, said: “Bluewater has always been an important part of the north Kent community.

"What we have always set out to do is be more than just retail.

"It’s about leisure days out, it’s about families. So that’s that’s been our focus."

Sharon Gathercole, who started as a receptionist in 1999 and is now an office support manager, said: “I remember that Bluewater put north-west Kent on the map.

"It also became the main source of employment locally and still is."
