Overnight closures on a major highway will be in place for three weeks to allow resurfacing work to take place.

The A369 Portbury Hundred, which connects Portishead to Junction 19 of the M5 and is a key route into Bristol, will close overnight from Monday.

Works will take place from 21:00 BST to 05:00 BST until 18 October, excluding weekends, and with the road reopening outside of these hours.

The closure will be for the entire length of the road and drivers are being advised to prepare for possible travel disruption, North Somerset Council said.

'Essential work'

A council spokesperson said the project is "vital" to maintain the A369 road and to "improve safety" for drivers.

In addition to resurfacing the carriageway, works will see damaged ironworks repaired or replaced, and the highway drainage will also be upgraded.

Road markings and signage will be getting a "refresh" and overgrown vegetation will be cleared.

Cabinet member for roads, Hannah Young, said: "These works are an investment in the future of our road network, ensuring safer journeys and a more resilient road infrastructure for North Somerset."

Diversions will be in place while the road is closed and traffic marshals will be available to assist residents if needed, a council spokesperson said.
