People living in Greater Manchester's 10 boroughs will elect their next mayor on 2 May. Here's what you need to know about all of the candidates and their top priorities.

Jake Austin says he is 'incredibly proud and humbled' to be representing the Liberal Democrats

Born-and-bred Wiganer Jake Austin, a 29-year-old project manager, now lives in Stockport where he was elected as a councillor for the Hazel Grove ward in May 2023.

He says the Lib Dems are the 'progressive alternative' to the Tories and Labour

"Greater Manchester deserves a mayor who will fight its corner," says Mr Austin. "Whether that's fighting against the closure of our essential fire services, or fighting against United Utilities to stop sewage being dumped in our rivers."

Mr Austin thinks we should build more homes, but not forget the environment

He supports building sustainable homes where they are needed most, while protecting green-belt areas. He says he wants to work with local authorities to re-develop the Places for Everyone plan to commit to a more sustainable vision for our communities.

Mr Austin wants to boost public transport

He says he is committed to reviewing axed local bus services over the last five years and bringing them into the Bee Network. He also wants to develop a plan to extend Metrolink services to Stockport and Bolton.

He promises to work on restoring public trust in Greater Manchester Police

Mr Austin says he is committed to making our streets safer and would protect current police and fire stations from any further cuts.

He says everyone deserves to feels safe to be who they are. Mr Austin also wants to develop a strategy to prevent rough sleeping across all areas of Greater Manchester.
