Developers are seeking permission to build more than 160 canal-side apartments on a Birmingham site that includes a former factory, stables and toll house.

The plans, which have been submitted to the city council, would create a new development on Gas Street, near nightlife hubs such as Broad Street and Brindley Place.

If given the green light, the scheme would involve the demolition of the former factory and stable buildings and the conversion of the toll house.

In its planning application, GNM Developments said the project would ensure that the toll house building’s history was "preserved and celebrated".

The scheme, called Gather and Soul, would include 161 apartments, communal kitchens and dining areas, plus other shared spaces such as a co-working area and a gym.

Out of the 161 co-living apartments, four would be within the former toll house.

A design and access statement said the buildings on the site were currently "in poor condition and vacant".

The planning application will be considered by Birmingham City Council's planning committee at a later date.
