One of Merseyrail‘s 1970s trains is set to begin a farewell tour ahead of the fleet being retired.

The 507 Class unit will set off from Hooton railway station later and make its leisurely way to New Brighton and back over the course of the day.

Tickets for the trip have sold out, with everyone from rail enthusiasts to ordinary commuters who have used the service over the years expected to be on board.

The fleet is being retired after 48 years in service and is being replaced by modern 777 Class trains.

The Wirral Swan Song tour is expected to begin at 09:20 BST and be in New Brighton by lunch time.

It will return to Hooton by 18:00 BST

The money raised for ticket sales for this and a second event later in the year will go to charities Centre 56, Rescue Me Animal Sanctuary, Blackburne House and Parkinson's Wirral.
