Swadlincote Bus Station will get an overhaul said Derbyshire County Council

A delayed revamp of a Derbyshire bus station is still scheduled to be carried out but not until next year, a council said.

Changes were promised for the bus stations at Alfreton, Matlock and Swadlincote bus stations in 2024 as part of the county’s Bus Service Improvement Plan.

But while final works to the Matlock bus stop were set to start earlier this month and the 16-week project at Alfreton started in July, the Swadlincote changes never progressed.

Derbyshire County Council, which will be carrying out the project with site owners South Derbyshire District Council, has promised passengers that the scheme is still being worked on.

Preliminary work has been carried out, said the authority, but a start date is now likely to be set for 2025 to avoid disruption over Christmas.

The scheme will redesign the layout of the town’s bus station in Civic Way, aiming to improve access for passengers with limited mobility.

The adjacent car park will also have its entrance and exit combined for drivers.

'Improved significantly'

A Derbyshire County Council spokesperson said: “We’re pleased to confirm the Swadlincote bus station improvement project is still happening and we are currently in the process of identifying the best start dates for the works programme.

“The improvements work to the bus station site will have a particular focus on accessibility and renewed infrastructure.

“The current layout does not work well and we are confident it can be improved significantly, particularly for passengers with limited or restricted mobility.

“We need to plan around other highways maintenance commitments and we are also keen to avoid causing disruption in the town over the Christmas period, so it is likely that we will be considering a 2025 start date.”
