Plans to redevelop the derelict site of a former brewery have been given the go-ahead.

The old Hanby Ales Brewery on Wem Industrial Estate will be transformed into a new HGV workshop for local firm DR & FA Ford Transport.

The existing building will be demolished and replaced with a workshop containing four maintenance bays and offices.

A lorry park with space for 50 vehicles will also be built at the site set to become DR & FA Transport's new base.

The development will “support an established business which is a long standing local employer”, according to a planning statement from the applicant.

Ahead of approval, Shropshire Council planners noted concern about the impact of lighting overspill on to a “well preserved” scheduled monument to the north of the site.

An ecology survey also noted badger activity and several sett entrances.

The site clearance plans were amended to take this into account.

The plan was granted full planning permission subject to submission of a lighting scheme and a detailed plan for a “buffer zone” around the badger setts.

This news was gathered by the Local Democracy Reporting Service which covers councils and other public service organisations.
