Nightclub site redevelopment given £916k funding

The site of the former Zanzibar nightclub in Newcastle-under-Lyme will be redeveloped

More than £916,000 of council funding has been approved for the redevelopment of the site of a former nightclub.

Sixty-three affordable homes and five office units are set for the site of the old Zanzibar venue in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, which closed in 2004.

The land on Marsh Parade has been vacant since the building was demolished in 2021 and Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council identified it as a key regeneration site.

It said the area would become a "gateway to the town" and would help to support wider regeneration.

Councillor Andrew Fear, the authority's portfolio holder for strategic planning, said the project was a "vital" part of the town's revitalisation.

He said it aligned with the council's commitment to create a "thriving, inclusive and sustainable" town centre.

The funding, totalling £916,363, was approved by the council's cabinet and has been raised through developer contributions made to the authority.

The Marsh Parade redevelopment, led by Aspire Housing, was given the green light during a meeting of the council's planning committee in October.
